Hey Instagram
How R yall doing ??? Seriously yall should comment how u r doing. Im curious What’s new in your life

This is a clip from a gig I did last Thursday with @julianlee_music @lexmachina and James Alsanders of Benny Golson’s I Remember Clifford. I try to keep it R3AL on here so I have some thoughts I want to share related to the clip. First and foremost, I wanna say that I have been recently blessed to hear some of my current musical heroes @estebanmcastro_ and @oscar.rossignoli play live. Their refinement, sense of freedom, technical ability, fearlessness, and creativity left my jaw on the floor when I saw them. Seriously go check them out.

Both of them left me super inspired (especially a conversation I had with Oscar) and it got me thinking about my own playing. I had been in a rut for months now and I finally realized the source of it. Consciously or subconsciously, I had been searching for perfection in my improvisations. I had been looking for the perfect “approach” or at least the one that was perfect for me, presuming that there was one. The aim was to “find” my original voice and the best way to convey it. I had all of these instructions in my head : close my eyes, open my eyes while staring at a single point, hear every single note I play, physically feel every single note I play, do this do that, be completely zen, develop my motifs, don’t play too fast, dont think too much, don’t just play eighth notes, stop trying to sound like Sullivan Fortner, listen to the bass player, listen to the drummer, listen to myself, leave space,,,, the list was endless. I had built up an imaginary criteria for a “perfect approach”. But seeing these cats play reminded me that maybe perfection isn’t the goal. (Caption continued in comments) by @sethingtonfinch
