First ride on the evil one. I am now in thrall to "Tiamat".

A goddess cometh, ancient in name,
Azure in hue and Reynolds of frame...

Everybody knows that named bikes are faster and need less maintenance.

Once again, yesterday I found myself dipping into a century's old tradition when I was admitted a Burgess of Trade for the city of Aberdeen, this time in the Townhouse.

In the olden days that would entail being presented to the town council as a fine upstanding citizen, a master craftsman and contributor to the running of the town - marking the transition from being an apprentice to freeman of the town. Swearing an oath, they would present five shillings to the Lord Provost, which would be added to the Common Good Fund - championed by Robert The Bruce in the early 14th century - and would then be free to trade within the city.

In many respects not much has changed - and along with Kenny & Scott (new Hammermen) I found myself being sworn in during a full council meeting, handing over my shillings to the Lord Provost then being ushered out the chamber, slightly bewildered.

While the prospect of me making even flip-flops has not got any closer, this does represent the most important milestone in admittance to the Shoemakers - first incorporated in 1484. A proud day and one I was delighted to share with Mrs H and ably supported by my Deacon Barney Crockett and Deacon Convenor Ian MacIntosh by @setinstoneaberdeen

Another amazing ride marred by an average poem! 😀 Major kudos to Fraser, Gary and everyone else who contributes to this being the UK's best "organised" ride. ❤️ by @setinstoneaberdeen

There’s being a wee bit behind the curve and there’s posting on “Insta”gram 13 months after the fact….

In April 2025 I got a supreme lesson in resilience, resourcefulness and sheer thrawn bloody-mindedness when I had a (probably) once in a lifetime trip to St Kilda. Getting a glimpse into the daily lives and tenuous existence of hardy individuals sometimes literally clinging onto life in the land that time forgot was an amazing experience. As Scotland’s slowest reader (not just Scotland’s slowest Instagrammer) I think I’m now onto chapter 2 of Roger Hutchinson’s amazing (so far!) book. by @setinstoneaberdeen

23,000+ steps - Copenhagen old university library, naval ships at Holmsen and Tivoli gardens. All of my favourite things - history, culture and most importantly ice cream. 🍦
