I've written my first blog post for @booandlupatterns ! It's all about how to add side lacing to a dress.

I absolutely love how my version turned out. It's got the historical, romantic vibes with a fun modern flare.

I used the Orchid Dress Pattern and digitally modified it using Affinity Designer. You can follow my instructions using paper, if you prefer. But if you try projector sewing you may never look back. It's the best!

Link in my bio. If you read it please let me know what you think 😀.

I'm delighted to present my third @ellieandmac_patterns blog post on how to modify patterns with #affinitydesigner (link in bio).

In this tutorial I go through the steps on lengthening or shortening key adjustment points on the #StephenPants .

The fabric I used was a lovely cotton stretch woven from @fabricland.canada .

My latest blog is all about WATERPROOFING WOVENS:
https://www.ellieandmac.com/blogs/blog/waterproofing-wovens (link in bio).

Yes, I capitalized it because it blew my mind to realize that I can use my favourite cotton woven prints to make a bag. But....are all waterproofing methods created equally? I personally investigated a few options and let you know about others that I have heard about.

Which methods have you used? Can you share your own pros and cons about the various options? Please let me know in the comments.

❤️

I've been in a sewing slump lately. I think about sewing, I dream about sewing, I'm active in sewing socials, but...I haven't been sewing.

To get myself back on track, I chose a tried and true pattern from @ellieandmac_patterns and paired it with a double knit from @fabricland.canada .

It was a total surprise for my mom. She knows that I have to make myself a few formal dresses for upcoming weddings and thought that is what I was working on. She was SO HAPPY (and genuinely surprised!!) when I gave her this dress. by @sewingfun101

I was completely captivated from the moment my eyes laid upon the stunning Stella Dress Pattern by @booandlupatterns . Because I'm extra and wanted it to be "more me", I added side lacing.

If you want to learn how to add side lacing to your garment I wrote all about it on the Boo and Lu Blog. I'd love if you gave it a read and let me know your thoughts.

Fabric was sourced from @fabricland.canada . Isn't it beautiful? I'm going to enjoy wearing this outfit once the weather cools down.

I mean, when going out to town (and by that i mean grocery shopping and school pickup), one must look their best 🥰 .

I am in my 100% cotton era.

When I first started sewing it was all about the knits. I loved how stretchy material tended to be forgiving and how it felt like second PJs.

I still want my clothing to be forgiving (hello 40s!), but I also want lighter, breathable fabric that reflects my current style.

The Jade Dress by @ellieandmac_patterns certainly checked off all criteria. It's a slip-on dress that cinches at the waist with a tie. There are optional back darts for extra definition, but after trying it on I skipped them. It's perfect as is. You can customize the neckline opening and the skirt slit (which I omitted). Don't forgot to add in pockets because why make a dress without them??

I've dubbed this outfit my "Vacation Dress". No, I am not going anywhere but the fabric makes me feel as rough I'm somewhere exotic (Italy? Lisbon? Somewhere along the Mediterranean....).

Fabric source is @gkfashionfabrics . They had this print in a few colours for a great price. Honestly, although they have the best social media ads people should go there simply because the fabric is even better than the ads. I am not affiliated with them at all 😀. by @sewingfun101

The Xaden Backpack by @stitchcraftpatterns is the perfect "Back to School" project. The entire bag was constructed on my domestic sewing machine using Tex 45 triple bonded nylon thread.

Although I'm sure it was designed to hold a binder, lunchbox and other school essentials, I can confidently assure you that the laptop pocket comfortably fits 2 regular sized pickleball rackets. It can also hold a water bottle, yoyo, tennis ball, random tickets, sunscreen and whatever else was packed for camp ;) .

The fabric began it's humble life as plain white water proof canvas from @lensmillstore . It was custom designed and later sublimated at the @vaughanpubliclibraries .

If you haven't explored your local library's Maker Space I would encourage you to do so! There are so many opportunities to learn and engage creatively with all sorts of technology.

Not me standing next to my oldest baby boy - who towers over me by almost 9". I'm not ready to let him go. So for now I'm giving him all the hugs and appreciating the little time we have left until he explores the world on his own.

We are both wearing @ellieandmac_patterns (Daphne Dolman and Discoverer Tee).

Any tips on how to survive a kid going away to college?

When you spend a week at a State Park, every moment is a picnic.

Meals on the cabin porch.
Munching on a hike.
Nibbling in the forest.
Snacking by the beach.

Wherever we were and whatever we were doing, there was always food - and lots and lots of water.

Which is why I made new [modified] Hydro Water Bottle Holders (by @ellieandmac_patterns) for our escapades. Link in bio.

It's a size large with 5" of length removed. In future versions I would increase the pocket depth to be able to fit more snacks 😄.

My son requested Washington Nationals Fabric (a relic from my one and only visit to @joann_stores) along with solids in navy, white and red (from @fabricland.canada) .

I paired the Hydro with our tried and true, absolute favourite pattern - the (retired, but still available via Ellie and Mac customer service) Discoverer Tee.

I admit, I am not a natural camper. I don't like the outdoors and in return, the outdoors does not like me. But family togetherness is worth the discomfort.

What snacks would you pack in your Hydro Water Bottle Holder? Let me know in the poll below and/or in the comments.

This was my muslin, or test version, of the fabulous new Lena Dress by @sinclairpatterns .

The pattern has changed since this version. The designer was so receptive to tester comments. She worked her magic to make an amazing pattern even better!

Fabric is an upcycled, thrifted cotton duvet. It was a bit boxy, but oh my, is it comfy to wear! The pattern does recommend fabrics with better drape - so linen, for example, would be preferred over cotton.

I opted to make the full sleeves aaaaand used the wrong cuff. Live and learn, right?

Overall, I'd still call this muslin more than wearable. It's now in rotation for my summer wardrobe. I'll be packing it for an upcoming camping trip (ugh....I hate camping) because it's super comfy, offers quite a bit of UV protection and I don't care if the fabric gets dirty. It's also machine washable, so extra points! You think pockets are the ultimate goal ( yes, it has pockets!!). For me, it's all about machine washable fibres 😄.

@sinclairpatterns just released the lovely #lenadress. The pattern is suitable for woven fabrics with drape. It features a relaxed dolman style bodice with princess seams and side ties. The skirt comes in 4 lengths and includes optional in seam pockets.

I modified my version to include a full lining. The original pattern has a bias tape finish to the neckline. Seams can be finished with a serger or French Seams.

The sleeve options are either short or full (which ended up being an awkward length on me). To solve this issue I would need to add a few extra inches for the sleeve to reach my wrist. Always measure before cutting! However, since I did want shorter sleeves for summer wear I cut the full sleeve at my elbow and used the full sleeve cuff (+1"). I absolutely LOVE the look.

I'm so happy with how the dress turned out. I will be wearing it at my son's HIGH SCHOOL graduation. I am so proud of him and his accomplishments. 👨‍🎓

This is also my entry to #sewfruity26. It reminds me of a blueberry sorbet. It feels fresh and summery.

Thank you to @frugalisama and @theyorkshiresewgirl for hosting #sewfrugal26 ! This was such a fun challenge and one that I look forward to repeating in the future!

As per the contest rules, I've sewn the free Maeve Dress by @violettefieldthreads using a thrifted duvet and vintage lace/buttons.

Modifications:
The bodice is fully lined with a clean inner finish. I added inseam pockets, a collar stand and ruffle to make it appear similar to the Luxe version - though it looks more like a fun, feminine collar, and a ruffle at the end of the sleeve. Length was added to both skirt tiers. Finally, I added 3 loop and pearl buttons to close up the bodice instead of the ties.

I'm an international sewist from Canada 🇨🇦. We have short summers that are hot, hazy and humid. This dress will be perfevt for the summer as it is made out of 100% cotton and is loose and flowy.

For future makes I wouldn't make the elastic as tight and I'd probably skip the sleeve ruffle.
