How much seam allowance do you really need?
There isn’t one width that works best for every part of a garment. The right seam allowance depends on the shape of the seam, the behaviour of the fabric, the intended seam finish and whether you may need room for fitting.
As a general guide:
• 5–7 mm for precise, enclosed details
• 1 cm for necklines, armholes and shaped seams
• 1.5 cm for general garment construction
• 2 cm for selected fitting and alteration seams
These measurements are starting points—not rigid rules. Always follow the pattern instructions first and consider whether the fabric frays, whether the edge will be enclosed and how the seam will be finished.
Save this carousel for your next sewing project. Which seam allowance do you use most often? Neutral cream and sand carousel cover with folded fabric, a measuring tape and a gold pin. Text reads: “Which Seam Allowance Should You Use? 5–7 mm, 1 cm, 1.5 cm, 2 cm.” by @sewingplanetuk

Will your fabric shrink after you make your garment?

The honest answer is… maybe.

Different fibres react differently to water, heat and agitation. Knowing which fabrics to pre-wash—and which ones to test first—can save you from one of the most frustrating dressmaking mistakes.

In this guide you’ll learn:
✔ Why fabrics shrink
✔ How to reduce shrinkage
✔ Which fabrics should be pre-washed
✔ Which fabrics need extra care

Save this carousel before your next sewing project—you’ll be glad you did. An elegant cream and espresso Instagram carousel cover from Sewing Planet titled “Why Fabrics Shrink: What Every Dressmaker Should Know.” A stack of folded fabrics sits beside a close-up illustration of fabric fibres, explaining that fibres swell, relax and change shape during washing and drying. The slide introduces the topic of fabric shrinkage and encourages viewers to swipe to learn more. by @sewingplanetuk

Voile punishes small mistakes. Wrong needle and you’ll see holes. Too much tension and the seam puckers. Skip basting and the fabric shifts under the foot before you’ve even started.

None of that means you’re bad at sewing. It usually just means nobody told you the settings that actually work on sheers.

Which step do you skip most, basting or testing your tension first? Be honest.

Swipe through for the full process, from pressing to the final seam finish. Save it for the next time voile lands on your cutting table. Cream and gold carousel title card reading “How to Sew Voile, expert tips for beautiful results,” with a spool of ivory thread, gold-handled scissors, pins, and a tape measure on sheer voile fabric. taken in London, United Kingdom by @sewingplanetuk

A tape measure is quintessential for sewing and pattern making. Can you imagine a dressmaker or a tailor without a tape measure around their necks? 😕⠀
⠀
Yes, it may be a humble tool, but I don’t think it gets enough attention when it comes to learning or skill-building. There is so more to this tool than initially meets the eye. 🧐 💪⠀
⠀
Find out all the ways we use a tape measure by reading our blog.
