THE MAKERS OF SPANISH-SPEAKING BAY AREA SLAP: LOS RAKA

Before the industry knew what to call it, Los Raka were building a movement.

Raka Dun and Raka Rich brought the sounds, language and pride of Black Panama to Oakland — rapping in Spanish over thunderous Bay Area beats with a cadence that made the music feel familiar, unapologetic and unmistakably local.

Their name comes from “Rakataka,” a Panamanian term often used to demean people from the hood. Los Rakas flipped it into a declaration: where you come from does not define your limits.

From Oakland to Panama, Mexico and Colombia, Los Rakas have carried Bay Area culture across borders while maintaining their independent spirit. Now, this groundbreaking duo is returning to the stage for the fifth annual Afro-Latinx Concert at the Ruth Williams Bayview Opera House.

“It’s always a Raka party when we hit the stage,” says Raka Dun.

Read the SF Bay View’s exclusive interview with Raka Dun by JR Valrey at the link in our bio.

94 years of leadership. 50 years of the SF Bay View. A legacy that crosses generations and borders.

This month, we celebrate our publisher, Dr. Willie Ratcliff, on his 94th birthday—and honor a life spent fighting for justice, dignity and self-determination.

Before becoming publisher of the SF Bay View National Black Newspaper, Dr. Ratcliff helped forge a powerful Black-Native alliance in Alaska. As chair of the Alaska State Commission for Human Rights, he fought alongside Alaska Native communities to confront the harms of forced boarding-school assimilation and demand high schools in Native villages.

That alliance also helped win historic access to Trans-Alaska Pipeline construction contracts for Black and Native contractors—an enduring example of what organized communities can achieve together.

Now, as Alaska’s U.S. Senate race approaches, that shared history is resonating again. Dr. Ratcliff’s family and other Black leaders in Alaska are supporting Alaska Native leader Mary Peltola, grounding today’s campaign in a long tradition of Black-Native solidarity.

Happy 94th birthday, Dr. Ratcliff. Thank you for opening doors—and refusing to let them close behind you.

From the Bay to Europe, the Luniz are still a hip-hop phenomenon. đŸŒđŸŽ€

“I Got 5 On It” helped put Oakland hip hop on the map, but the Luniz’ influence has always reached far beyond the Bay.

In this new SF Bay View conversation, Numskull reflects on:

Taking Bay Area music around the world

Performing for sold-out crowds in Germany and beyond

Why he calls supporters “fam,” not fans

The evolution of the Luniz’ sound

His long-awaited solo album, expected Dec. 31

Rooted in Oakland. Respected worldwide. Still creating.

BOOK REVIEW: We Are Balogun: A Black Lives Matter Memoir đŸ“šâœŠđŸŸ

What does it take to turn political education, community service and lived experience into a lifelong commitment to liberation?

In We Are Balogun, Yafeuh Balogun chronicles his journey from Oak Cliff, Dallas, to co-founding the Huey P. Newton Gun Club during the Black Lives Matter era. More than a personal memoir, the book traces an intergenerational tradition of Black organizing rooted in discipline, mentorship, community responsibility and self-determination.

Reviewer Eric “E Da Ref” Hunter calls the memoir an important contribution to the literature of the Black Liberation Movement — documenting the political development of an organizer while preserving the often-overlooked history of Dallas’ Black freedom struggle.

The book explores organizing beyond the headlines: political education, direct service, coalition building, wellness, survival training and the enduring responsibility to serve the people.

⭐ Rating: 4.5/5

“This is required reading” for young people who need to see Black liberation not as distant history, but as a living struggle they are connected to and must carry forward.

California lawmakers have sent AB 2760 to Gov. Gavin Newsom, proposing a temporary pause on law enforcement use of wearable electric shock gloves through Jan. 1, 2030.

The bill, authored by Assembly member LaShae Sharp-Collins, would also block state funding for the devices and require the California Department of Justice to study their safety and community impacts. Traditional tasers and stun guns would not be affected.

Gov. Newsom has until Sept. 30 to sign or veto the measure.

Today, Leo Oliveira Xavier has been released after months in ICE detention.

Leo — an Afro-Brazilian drummer, cultural educator and Oakland community member — was detained by ICE after reporting for a routine check-in in San Francisco. His freedom is a powerful victory for Leo, for everyone who loves him and for the organizers and community members who refused to let his name be forgotten.

This moment belongs to the family, friends, advocates and immigrant-rights organizers who showed up, spoke out and kept demanding: Free Leo. Free them all.

We celebrate Leo’s release while remembering the many people who remain separated from their families and communities in ICE detention. The struggle for freedom, due process and dignity continues.

Welcome home, Leo. âœŠđŸŸ
