Comment raconter l’Histoire ?

Exposition "Festival of (in)gratitude"

🤝 Avec le @festivaldautomne

Akram Zaatari, Black and White is Color and Turning Two Plots into One, 2022, pigmented inkjet print on backlit cloth, 100 x 80 cm each

In 1982, Cokin introduced its P-series camera filter system, which allowed photographers to attach a single adapter to their lenses and mount different filters from the company’s collection onto it as needed. Color filters for black-and-white photography allowed photographers to intervene in the amount of light transmitted or reflected from colored surfaces, affecting how those surfaces registered on black and-white film. By selectively lightening or darkening different colors, photographers could alter the tonal relationships between surfaces according to their color.

Both works, "Black and White is Color" and "Turning Two Plots into One", which refer to pages E5 and E4 of the "Beirut Darkroom Logbook", converse with this principle by bringing the colors of photographic filters literally into the photographic print. Both works engage with the “coloring” of cityscapes through the land-use and building-factor codes widely used by planners, but also by real-estate speculators. The series evokes postwar Beirut as a city in an unsettled moment, preparing to be reshaped according to the visions of entrepreneurial developers.

On view in Hamburg:

Mounira Al Solh
Elyssa, ela, hela, Elyssa, I myth you more

Sfeir-Semler is proud to present @mouniraalsolh‘s third solo exhibition in our Hamburg spaces, comprising paintings, textiles, ceramics, works on paper, video and installation. Moving fluidly between media, Al Solh develops an expansive practice in which drawing, writing, embroidery, colors, film and objects bring personal narratives and collective histories into relation. Rather than adhering to distinct categories, she intertwines the intimate and the political, combines humor and tragedy, and blends fiction and testimony to retell stories of displacement, memory, resistance, and belonging.
