On Sunday night we had a little “barbecue ’n’ ballots” gathering. We had our BBQ and a little carrot cake for dessert, washed up — though we were tempted to leave a sauce print for fun — and brought out our ballots, booklets, and brains.

With a few “I’m on the fence”s and “I have no clue”s remaining, we spent some time sharing, discussing, and comparing. Pretty soon we had all our bubbles filled in without compromise. And not all our choices matched — proof that campaigning was not part of the process.

So if you still haven’t made all your selections, I’m not saying you have to host a barbecue to do so, but it sure can be helpful to gather endorsements from a few organizations you trust, get together with a small group, and talk.

By the way, if you plan on mailing in your California June 2 Primary Election ballot, today — Tuesday, May 26, 2026 — is the last day to do so and be confident that your ballot will be postmarked on time.

We didn’t know what to expect going into last night’s Echo & the Bunnymen show at the SF Masonic. Sure, you can read reviews of recent performances, but those are other people’s experiences. Plus, Ian McCulloch can be famously… unpredictable. So we went in with open minds.

And came out with full minds — filled with memories old and new — and even fuller hearts.

It was a great show.

Thank you, Ian McCulloch, for sticking with it through thick and thin. And of course, thank you to Will Sergeant for your vastly underrated brilliance.

I’d credit the rest of the band by name, but I don’t have that handy at the moment. Suffice to say: they were excellent.

My dad left this earthly plane seven years ago today.

He loved double entendre signs, especially this one we passed every year on family trips.

He could play anything from the Scott Joplin songbook, but favored Maple Leaf Rag — at a tempo that allowed deeper understanding.

And though he didn’t talk much about it, he was proud to have served his country in the Army Medical Corps.

He was a man of peace who taught me to try to understand the other side.

He abhorred war.

Miss you, Dad.

Caught a song in the last episode of Shrinking that I couldn’t shake—sweet, a little melancholy. A bit strange.

“Forrest Lawn” — Better Oblivion Community Center

Reminded me of the Say’s Phoebe—soft but confident, with a hint of ache.

Listened again later. And then again. And again.

Grateful for small, unexpected joys.

We took in some good, sweet medicine last night in the form of Keb’ Mo’, accompanied by his son, Kevin “K. Roosevelt” Moore II.

There are many remarkable things about Keb’ Mo’, but what stands out to me right now is his unwavering commitment to the power, beauty, and healing potential of love—and his uncanny ability to honor Delta blues tradition while still weaving in elements from other genres, even distant ones, when it spiritually makes sense.

Keb’ will be at SFJAZZ for three more shows (4/3–4/5). If you’re in need of a soul tonic—something to clear away the haze of distrust, disappointment, and everything else—go hear this man.

He’ll remind you there is still goodness, beauty, and hope in this world.

Happy Birthday to Yellowstone National Park!

On March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became what’s widely considered the world’s first national park, setting the stage for federal protection of public lands across the country, with the signature of President Ulysses S. Grant.

Today we celebrate the beauty, the wildlife, the geothermal wonders, but we also remember that Yellowstone’s creation displaced Native peoples who had lived on and stewarded that land for thousands of years.

To truly love our parks is to tell the full story.

So as we mark this milestone, let’s honor it with action:

One call.
One conversation.
One donation.
One commitment to defend our public lands.

Funny how this didn’t even crack the news cycle.

The House just passed a sweeping bipartisan housing package (390–9) aimed at affordability + boosting home construction.

And to underscore the bipartisanship:
Co-sponsored by Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Rep. French Hill (R-AR).

Not exactly cable-news catnip.
But real work on a real problem.

The legislation goes after some of the systemic barriers that make it harder to build and finance homes — regulatory bottlenecks, outdated structures, the usual suspects.

And yes — because I know my people — expanding housing supply should *also* mean holding local + state leaders accountable to make sure development is smart, sustainable, and environmentally sound.

Both things matter.

Look… no bill is perfect.
No vote fixes everything overnight.

But cooperation on real-life issues that affect millions of people?

That’s worth noticing.

Functional government. In this economy. 🏠

Had to lobby pretty hard to keep this coyote in the yard, coyote brush that is, aka baccharis pilularis.

They are a hearty, drought-tolerant, native, habitat species. And if they get too scraggly and wild looking for you, you have a few choices other than removal. They prune beautifully or they can be coppiced. “Co what”, you ask? Coppice: Cut down to the ground.

Oh, and here’s a bonus, for a ground cover/ low brush version, check out the pigeon point variety!
