Every week, people gather at UN Plaza to play free chess and mahjong, learn from instructors, and meet people from all over the city.
Mahjong and chess happen year-round, weather permitting, every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Fridays from 2 to 5 p.m.

The Civic Center Community Benefit District (@sfciviccenter) stewards the space: sets up
the games every Friday, is on site in their orange uniforms and oversees the info booth and rec shed for all other game materials.

Free chess instruction is provided by the Mechanics’ Institute, established in 1854 and home to the oldest continuously operating chess club in the country.

Join SFGovTV’s Michael Baltazar as he learns the games!
