Director of Programming, Jason Wolos, leads the charge with the Q&A tonight for a lively opening night for the 21st edition of San Francisco Short Film Festival playing at the 4-Star Theater from October 15th to 22nd.

The short film — what a perfect genre. Like the perfect snack. Or the very best poem: intensity and imagination distilled down to the most crucial and poignant of words. Short films are the quintessential starting point, and for some filmmakers, the definitive end goal.

You are now just a moment away from checking out 88 excellent short films around the world. taken in 4 Star Theatre by @sfindiefest

You still have time to get to the 4 Star Theatre by 6pm tonight for our opening night film, "Hen" by György Pálfi, at the Green Film Festival of San Francisco.

Why did the chicken cross the road? Perhaps she was simply in search of a better life….

Following his cult films Taxidermia and Free Fall, György Pálfi is back with a tragicomic tale full of heart and feathers. This compelling, original film tells its story through a chicken's eyes. Our heroine—played by eight real-life chickens named Eszti, Szandi, Feri, Enci, Eti, Enikő, Nóra, and Anett—departs her wretched life on an industrial farm in search of a safe spot to raise her chicks. On her tumultuous voyage, she finds refuge in the courtyard of a crumbling restaurant in Greece where she discovers love, confronts the pecking order, and fights to protect her eggs from a greedy owner. Her droll yet touching quest for motherhood mirrors the messy compromises and silent struggles of human lives.

"Hen is an inherently uncharacteristic opening night selection for the annual Green Film Festival (presented under the auspices of the impressively ambitious SF IndieFest) prior to its nationwide theatrical release in early-November. It is not overtly environmental in tone but it dwells considerably on the coexistence of life and, properly, how to live it."

Sockeye Salmon in the vast Bristol Bay, Alaska watershed.

(Photo: courtesy of Jason Ching)

Bristol Bay’s salmon run is the world’s largest and protecting it is the reason Yup ‘ik Indigenous leader Alannah Acaq Hurley led a campaign to stop the massive Pebble Mine, safeguarding 25 million acres of pristine Alaskan wilderness.

Come see Alannah’s story in our new short film POWER OF THE PEOPLE, this Sun. Oct. 18, 12:00pm at the 4-Star Theater, part of a great shorts program at the Green Film Festival of San Francisco.

Tickets: https://greenfest2026.eventive.org/films/6a94e3c3930cbee8e8609857

Acting on behalf of 15 tribal nations and a broad based community coalition including commercial and sports fisherman, Alannah helped protect Bristol Bay’s watershed.

For her dedication to insuring a sustainable, thriving Bristol Bay, Alannah was recognized with the 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize for North America.

Wowzers! You don't see a 10 out of 10 review most days, so congrats to the wonderful documentary "The Terrorist" screening this Sunday, October 18th at 2:30pm at the Green Film Festival of San Francisco. Filmmaker and subject expected to attend.

"The Terroirist" is a character study of the legendary winemaker Randall Grahm (founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard). Randall has embarked on a journey to discover an entirely new grape variety that's indigenous to North America. It's a Sisyphus-like story of a true iconoclast trying to overcome huge odds, both agriculturally and personally. It’s a meditation on staying true to one’s mission and the obsession that comes with it. It's also about Randall’s connection and commitment to his land.

In today's SF Chronicle:

Natalie Baszile did not set out to become a filmmaker. The Richmond District resident was a writer, whose 2014 debut novel “Queen Sugar,” set on a Louisiana sugarcane farm, became a long-running series for Ava DuVernay.

“In the wake of ‘Queen Sugar,’ I saw how powerful film — in that case, television — was and I noticed how much broader an audience it reached,” Baszile told the Chronicle. “I’ve always been a visual, creative person, anyway, that always influenced my work. So, I thought, ‘Why not try it?’”

She continues to write novels. Her latest, “Friends and Family,” set in San Francisco, arrived on bookstore shelves earlier this month. But she has another milestone to celebrate this year as she completed “Harvest,” her first feature, an award-winning documentary she made in collaboration with her daughter Hyacinth Parker.

“Harvest,” which screens at 6 p.m., Oct. 20, at the 4 Star Theatre and is available online as part of the Green Film Festival of San Francisco (Thursday, Oct. 15-22), follows a Louisiana farm family — brothers Courtney, Willie Jr., Adrain, and Willis Nelson — from harvest to harvest of corn, soybeans, and cotton. The young men dream of growing their business into the biggest farm in the United States.

Press coverage in today's 48hills.org:

The clock is ticking down to an election that will surely test the remaining strength of our democracy—in particular, whether we’re still a nation that can stand up to forces which refuse to accept a popular loss. Those forces have already made it clear they’d like to greatly curb who gets to vote and protest, two actions increasingly directed against them. So it’s an eerily apt moment for two annual local film festivals that are largely about citizen activism.

Taking place this Thu/15 through October 22 at SF’s 4Star Theater (in addition to an online viewing platform), SF Indiefest offshoot the Green Film Festival provides a disparate slate of features and shorts addressing “problems facing the planet” and their potential solutions—though not without some fun en route.

Via Local News Matters:

The Green Film Festival of San Francisco launches its 2026 edition Thursday, challenging the perception of environmental cinema as depressing, boring or preachy. Nearly 50 films screen at the 4-Star Theater and online during the eight-day event, a project of SF IndieFest. Fare ranges from activist profiles to body horror to an avian adventure. “Hen” opens the festival on Oct. 15. Greek filmmaker Gyorgy Palfi presents the world through the eyes of a charismatic chicken who abandons an industrial farm for a better life in the narrative dramedy. Also featured is “The Terroirist,” Jeffrey Reiner’s documentary about California winemaker Randall Grahm and his quest to discover a new grape variety, on Oct. 18. “A City in the Forest” closes the festival on Oct. 22. An Atlanta grassroots movement fights a plan to raze an urban forest and build a large police facility there in Lev Omelchenko and Nolan Huber’s documentary. “Best Day Ever,” on Oct. 17, from Ben Knight and Berne Broudy, follows two adaptive mountain bikers as they confront the challenges of their disabilities and experience joy in Vermont’s mountain-biking community. Also this year: the return of the festival’s Eco-Horror Midnight Movie.
