🎂🎶 Celebrating the birthday of Camille Saint-Saëns, born October 9, 1835, whose remarkable musical legacy continues to resonate nearly two centuries later.

A brilliant composer, pianist and organist, Saint-Saëns left behind a vast and varied body of work, from the beloved Carnival of the Animals and Danse macabre to symphonies, concertos and chamber music that remain concert hall favorites around the world.

🎻 Throwback to South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 28th season, Juxtapositions, when we opened the season with Saint-Saëns’ passionate and virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, featuring GRAMMY Award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey, under the baton of Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso.

Today, we celebrate a composer whose music continues to inspire performers and audiences generation after generation. ✨

Powerful, dramatic, unrelenting. 🎶

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s 2026/27 “Unstoppable” Season begins this November with a Masterworks program that brings together two great voices of the Russian symphonic tradition: Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12, “The Year 1917,” receiving its SFSO Premiere, propels listeners forward with sweeping, cinematic themes that pulsate with drama and intensity, blending power with the composer’s signature wit.

Leonard Bernstein, a great admirer of Shostakovich and champion of his music, once drew a direct line between the two composers:

“Shostakovich is a basically traditional Russian composer... a true son of Tchaikovsky—and no matter how modern he ever gets, he never loses that tradition. It is a tradition of symphonic music that tells a story, that has deep feelings about country, and people, and humanity.”

That musical connection comes to life on the opening program, pairing Shostakovich’s Twelfth with Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, featuring acclaimed pianist Sheng Cai, along with the SFSO Premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s “Cathedrals” from All Things Majestic.
