🌿 Mangrove World: Koggala Lagoon

Mangroves can be found around the lagoon and along the shores of its islands. Fish, crabs, and other aquatic creatures find shelter among their roots, while the lagoon also provides feeding and breeding grounds for many bird species.

🏝️ Small Islands

The lagoon is dotted with numerous small islands and islets. One of the best known is Madol Duwa, which gained cultural significance through the novel of the same name by Sri Lankan writer Martin Wickramasinghe.

🪾Cinnamon Island

Another interesting stop is Cinnamon Island. Here, you can see how Sri Lanka’s famous Ceylon cinnamon is traditionally processed. Cinnamon also holds an important place in the region’s cultural and economic history.

🐊 Wildlife

The wetlands of the lagoon are home to various fish, shrimp, waterbirds, and water monitors. Official wetland records also document crocodile species in the area.

The Gathering🐘

📍What makes Minneriya world famous is the extraordinary gathering of elephants known as “The Gathering.”

🌱During the dry season, as the water level of the tank drops, vast grasslands emerge along its shores. Fresh, nutrient rich grass grows in these areas, attracting Sri Lankan elephants from the surrounding forests. Different family groups come together in the same feeding grounds.

🏞️Minneriya is also a beautiful example of how a man made reservoir and wildlife can become deeply interconnected. The ancient Minneriya Tank, which has been used for around 1500 years, is now at the heart of the elephants seasonal movements. What you see along those vast shores is a landscape where ancient Sri Lanka’s irrigation system and modern wildlife coexist.

🐆Minneriya is also home to leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, spotted deer, macaques, and langurs. The area around the tank is rich in birdlife, with storks, herons, cormorants, and various waterbirds. Mugger crocodiles and water monitors can also be found around the tank.
