Airway Day in Dr. Degitz’s Critical Care Elective gave students a hands-on opportunity to build essential airway management and clinical judgment skills. 🫁

The day began in the JUMP Simulation Center, where students learned about basic airway adjuncts including oral and nasal airways, progressing to laryngeal mask airways (LMAs) and endotracheal tubes (ETTs).

Students practiced inserting oral and nasal airways using airway trainers, opening and maintaining the airway, and providing ventilation with an Ambu bag. They also observed advanced airway placement and learned the critical nursing responsibilities involved during these procedures.

The learning then moved into a simulated patient care environment, where students cared for a high-fidelity simulator acting as their patient. Applying their newly acquired knowledge, students responded to changing patient conditions, communicated with providers, and implemented nursing interventions in a realistic critical care scenario.

Thank you to Scott Swank, Simulation Specialist, for facilitating this engaging learning experience, and to Sue Copp, our standardized simulation participant, who served as the physician for today’s scenario.

Experiences like these help bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world nursing practice, preparing students for the challenges of caring for critically ill patients.🩺 by @sfmccon

Our ABSN students in NURS 301 are putting Competency-Based Education (CBE) into action!

Through interactive learning activities like these, students work together to analyze patient situations, make nursing decisions, connect classroom concepts to clinical practice, and explain the reasoning behind their choices.

In NURS 301, the goal isn’t just to ask, “Do you know it?” We also want students to demonstrate, “Can you apply it?” 💡

These activities give our students a safe space to practice, make connections, ask questions, and build confidence as they develop the foundational competencies they will carry into clinical practice.

September is National Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month.

At Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing, we believe caring for others begins with seeing the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

As nurses and future nurses, we have the opportunity to listen without judgment, recognize when someone may be struggling, offer support, and remind others that they are never alone.

A simple “How are you really doing?” can open the door to a conversation that matters. Check in. Listen. Be present. Encourage someone to seek help when they need it. And remember to care for yourself, too.

The mental health crisis is real, and it is worth advocating for. That is why we are committed to supporting our students through available mental health resources, including access to a licensed counselor.

You are important. Your mental health matters. Your life matters.
