October is Filipino American History Month (FAHM) – a time to honor the profound history, enduring culture, and vital contributions of the Filipino American community that help shape the vibrant fabric of San Francisco.

From the historic roots of SoMA to generations of activists, workers, artists, and leaders – Filipino Americans have deeply enriched San Francisco's civic and cultural life. At MOHCD, we recognize that honoring this legacy means continuing the work of Filipino-American visionaries to champion housing stability, economic justice, and community-driven spaces that allow the Filipino community to continue putting down roots and thriving in San Francisco.

Whether it's uplifting Filipino-owned small businesses and neighborhood cultural anchors or participating in community events and cultural programs – let us celebrate the rich heritage, resilience, and living history of our Filipino American neighbors today and every day. SF MOHCD graphic for October's Filipino American History Month, with text that reads: "We proudly honor the enduring history, culture, and community impact of our Filipino American residents. At MOHCD, we are committed to preserving this rich heritage by championing housing stability and cultural spaces so families can continue thriving here for generations to come." by @sfmohcd

As Bay Area Transit Month wraps up, Kapuso at the Upper Yard in San Francisco stands out as a powerful blueprint for the future of sustainable city living.

Located directly adjacent to the Balboa Park BART station, this award-winning 100% affordable, mixed-use transit-oriented development transforms an underutilized parking lot into a vibrant community hub. It features approximately 10,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, housing retail, a childcare facility, a family wellness center, and a youth bicycle education hub. Additionally, the property offers residents intensive on-site social services, including mental health support, crisis prevention, and employment training.

The 9-story development was made possible with support from the California Strategic Growth Council's (SGC) Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) program, which funds the construction of affordable housing near transit as a key strategy to reduce GHG emissions by reducing vehicle miles traveled. With over 74% of residents regularly utilizing public transit, Kapuso proves how deeply integrating affordable housing with robust multi-modal transit networks – including BART, Muni, and regional bike paths – reduces carbon footprints, combats climate change, and connects families to opportunity.

As we close out the month celebrating public transit, developments like Kapuso remind us that building closer to transit is essential for creating equitable, resilient, and thriving cities. The Mission district has long stood as a vibrant heartbeat of culture, art, and resilience, and this Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, MOHCD honors the tangible impact of one of this neighborhood's strongest anchors – the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District.

Their vital work focuses on keeping the district's rich heritage alive while actively centering historically marginalized voices within our community. From critical capital investments for community spaces and cultural services, to vibrant placemaking through murals and public art along Calle 24 – they are preserving legacy businesses, honoring intersectional Latinx history, and keeping the Mission a safe, inclusive place for all.

MOHCD is proud of our continued community partnership with the Calle 24 Latino Cultural District through the San Francisco Cultural Districts Program, supporting initiatives that positively shape the neighborhood's physical and cultural landscape, now and for generations to come.
