SFUSD is considering major changes to how elementary school enrollment works, and the choices made now will shape families’ options for years to come.

We asked parents what they want from a new system. The message was clear: families want more predictability without giving up meaningful choice.

Big news from SF Parents: Rebecca Kee is our next Executive Director!

Rebecca is a former SFUSD teacher, a current public school parent, and a longtime member of the SF Parents community. She brings deep nonprofit leadership experience, and a commitment to the students and families at the heart of our work.

As Meredith Dodson transitions from her role as our founding Executive Director to focus on our sister organization @sfparentsaction through the election, Rebecca will lead SF Parents into its next chapter. Please join us in giving Rebecca a very warm welcome!

And stay tuned to hear from Rebecca herself in our newsletter tomorrow. by @sfparents

Happy back-to-school, San Francisco! 🍎 You may have seen in our newsletter this week – these are my last couple of weeks as Executive Director.

Six years ago, if you were a parent who wanted a say in what was happening at SFUSD, here’s what that looked like. One minute of public comment — at the start or the end of a six-hour meeting. And if you spoke up, you might end up as the criticized subject of a school board member’s Twitter thread.🫣

That’s not how it works anymore.

Parents are in the room now when the big decisions get made. And after years of crisis headlines, SFUSD is starting this year with a balanced budget, a stronger leadership team, a real focus on student outcomes. That happened because thousands of you organized.

It has truly been the honor of my lifetime and my career to get to lead this work, alongside all of you.🙏

Our new ED joins us in just over a week, she is so excited to get started, and I can’t wait for you to meet her. I‘ll be supporting a strong transition as well as making sure, through our political sister arm, @sfparentsaction, we elect strong school board commissioners who put kids before politics. November matters.

So. Here’s to a great school year. Let’s go, @sfunified and SF Parents! 💪🎉 taken in San Francisco Unified School District by @sfparents

This week SF Parents’ Board members, staff, and Member Leaders met with @sfunified Superintendent Maria Su and SFUSD’s new Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services, John Davis, to talk about the year ahead and what families need from our public schools.

A big win we’re celebrating is the district’s commitment to creating a public data dashboard that will give families greater transparency into how students are doing across our schools. Through our SF Kids Can’t Wait campaign our parents have been advocating for this for years - more accessible information about student outcomes, especially in reading and math, so families can understand where students are and where more support is needed.

Our SF Parents Community Organizers Geri, Michael and Gilbert had the privilege of attending the ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the new Mission Bay School with @sfunified Mayor @danielluriesf @philkimsf @jlam_sf @mattdorseysf . This beautiful campus will serve a community that has seen an influx of families over the past decade. It is just one of many special campuses across San Francisco - and we were excited to join city and district leaders in opening its doors. Next up is welcoming the kids! by @sfparents

School board decisions shape what happens in classrooms every day. But most parents don’t have time to read hundreds of pages of agendas or sit through hours of meetings. That’s where SF Parents comes in! Today’s newsletter shares how our team of staff and parents follow the SFUSD Board of Education and help families stay informed all year long. For the last of our 5 favorite moments from the 2025–26 school year, we want to look back at our Let’s Shake the Trees event about how to fully fund San Francisco’s public schools.

We were proud to host this community conversation, helping families better understand where school funding comes from and how we can work together to bring more resources to our schools. taken in San Francisco, California by @sfparents

As we head towards Back to School, we’re continuing the countdown of our 5 favorite moments from the 2025–26 school year!

School outreach saw us visiting 20+ schools. We had good conversations, heard lots of stories and ideas, shared concerns, highlighted celebrations, and made new connections. We are grateful for every parent, educator, and community member who took a moment to chat with us.

One of our favorite programs from the ‘25-‘26 school year was our SF Parents Read to Lead Literacy workshop.

In ‘25-‘26 we visited Visitacion Valley Elementary School and Tenderloin Community School, gathering parents to help them better understand how children learn to read. We practice strategies you can use at home, go over district literacy reports and scores, and connect with other parents who share the same goal of helping every child become a confident reader.

Thank you to every parent, educator, and school community that made Read to Lead such a meaningful success. taken in San Francisco, California by @sfparents
