FIVE DAYS TILL PETITION DELIVERY🔥

If you haven’t signed the petition yet you can do so at the link in our bio. Help us relay the message that now over 1500 students, faculty, and staff members are fed up with president Lynn Mahoney’s refusal to open negotiations and coming to the bargaining table with real proposals. by @sfsustudentunion

Join us this Monday (and every Monday) at 5pm to continue resisting the cuts, building student power, and biting back! 🐊 by @sfsustudentunion

Last week Student Union along with faculty and department chairs voted in these five demands. It is integral we stay in community so we can engage more of the SFSU community and take action to ensure our demands are met. by @sfsustudentunion

The semester is flying by and we want to recap and regroup as we move into a new stage of organizing, mobilizing, and building our movement.

Earlier this month we participated in the statewide week of action to democratize AI with @castudentsunited with some fabulous teach ins from @resistusledwarsfsu @lfssfsu @gabrielasfsu and Students for AI Accountability and Awareness. We held a forum to further discuss our opinions on AI and the OpenAI contract, as well as a wonderful community art build.

We voted in our general meetings to advance a more strategic approach to bring members, build a network, and see where our power is. We have been canvassing our classes and announcing our petition to pressure president Lynn Mahoney to agree to OPEN negotiations with elected negotiators. If you haven’t already signed it, you can at the QR code or the link in our bio!

We held a teach in on the France student protests from the last month and discussed the similarities and differences of our demands and conditions.

We co endorsed screenings of When ICE Melts featuring labor and community organizers from Minneapolis and St. Paul who successfully ousted the ICE urge in MN earlier this year. If you missed it there is still one screening tonight at ATA at 7pm!

All of that is great but what now?

The next part of this plan involves seeing how much reach we’ve been able to have through canvassing our classes. On November 3rd at 12pm we will gather at Malcolm X Plaza to march and deliver the petition signatures (anonymously) to Lynn Mahoney’s office. We are also planning a Town Hall with the California Faculty Union as well as a Sounds of Resistance day on November 12th from 10am-5pm. If you’re in a band or know any bands/performers, message us! Hopefully all of this pressure will cause Mahoney to agree to open negotiations sometime during the week of November 16th.

CFA has also launched a student strike pledge! Show your support for our faculty by signing on!

Finally, we are trying to build a sustainable student movement that will outlast any and all of us. Here are some ways to plug in and organize even if you can’t make it to a meeting. by @sfsustudentunion

Building student power every Monday at 5pm in HUM 217‼️🔥 by @sfsustudentunion

Last year SFSU announced a CSU wide partnership with OpenAI to give students free access to the already free chatbot service ChatGPT, making the CSU the “first public-private AI powered institution” (President Lynn Mahoney’s words). Allegedly this contracts prohibits OpenAI from harvesting student data as they use ChatGPT but students and faculty were not consulted about this decision to enter into this contract. Initially this contract cost the CSU $17 million for its pilot year (2025-26). In July, the contract was renewed for a three year duration, costing $13 million per year. A great financial choice for a public university system in a budget deficit right? There is a chance every year to cancel this contract which is part of what Student Union is demanding. We are also demanding students and faculty have the power to make these decisions instead of just administrators. We are demanding that these decisions be made at the departmental level so departments that decide it is necessary to put money towards AI can do so and departments that deem it unnecessary don’t have to have their budget depleted for a tool they don’t want or need. If you are interested in doing more research around what it would take to cancel this contract join our Demand 2 caucus and come to any of the events next week! by @sfsustudentunion

Students across the CSU system will engage in critical and meaningful conversations about the CSU-OpenAI contract during the week of October 12-15 as a part of the California Students United coalition. Join us throughout the week to discuss, share, and create, driven by our human connections, about the impacts of generative AI at the CSU. by @sfsustudentunion
