Saiu hoje "Mental health, care, and illness politics: Lessons from the Brazilian Anti-Asylum Struggle", publicado na versão online da @sftpmag.

For our final entry in our Cuba in the Archives series, we have the article “People’s Science” published in volume 3, issue 1 of SftP magazine by the People’s Science Collective. This article envisions the work to be done toward developing a true science for the people - a practice we see today already well developed in Cuba, and which SftP today, as well as back when this article was written, stands firmly in support of.

Head to our blog (or click the link in our bio) to read the article and see the full digitized magazine issue! All entries in our Cuba in the Archives series are now up! by @sftpmag

[RSVP'S CLOSED!]

🚨 Concerned about the climate crisis? Worried about the impending disasters brought about by the climate emergency? Join us for a lecture and interactive discussion! (In-person + online)

Come learn about how the immediate threats of the climate crisis are shaped and driven by a global system of wealth accumulation, plunder, and militarization at the expense of our environment and our people. As science workers in the belly of the beast, we will also analyze the role of science and scientific institutions in fueling this system.

What can we do in the face of disasters and calamities brought about by anthropogenic climate change? Through the lens of Chris Begley's work in disaster preparation, we will explore "disaster preparedness" outside of individualism. We will tackle the question: what does a genuine, collective, and revolutionary response to the climate crisis look like?

Please join SftP Anti-militarism & Environmentalism Working Group in the inaugural Cuba Science Seminar. The first in this series on September 26 (1200 ET / 1800 CET) will feature Dr. Fabrizio Chiodo, immunologist at Italy's National Research Council, visiting lecturer at the Finlay Institute in Havana, and recipient of the Carlos J. Finlay Order by the Cuban Council of Ministers for his work on Soberana COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Chiodo will share his firsthand account of Cuba's cutting edge research organized around serving the people, the challenges of socialist science under US imperialist blockade, and concrete ways scientists and activists in the Global North can become part of Cuba's revolutionary science.

We had a blast representing Science for the People broadly at @socialismconference! And between facilitating a panel, attending many others, and talking to quite a few interested attendees as our table, quite a productive time too. These conversations were clarifying -- socialists understand the political nature of science and are ready to apply this framework to emerging problems (like geoengineering, as we addressed on the panel) as well as present ones (like AI, addressed on several other panels). However, they also gave us a sense of the scale of our task -- massive -- and the what skills will be most necessary as we work toward it.

While technical skills are one piece, what's paramount in its urgency and centrality is education, that is the capacity to explain science and knowledge production in a way that informs, builds consciousness, and aligns scientific professionals with the working class. So! We're sharing this adaptation of our new chapter info-pamphlet to call on educators of all types, K-12, higher ed, informal, or otherwise, to consider getting involved with our chapter. Go to bit.ly/sftp_chi_get_involved to get on our email list (or email us directly at sftpchicago@gmail.com or Signal us at sftp_chicago.77). If you're not an educator or interested in education, that's quite all right too! You are all invited to join our movement for radical science. by @sftpmag

Our third entry in the SftP Cuba in the Archives series is this interview from 1980 with Molly Coye, at the time a health activist for the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union, who spent much time in Cuba observing their occupational health systems (and their many triumphs over U.S. systems).

We’re launching our SftP Cuba in the Archives series to highlight articles from the extensive publication history of the SftP magazine centering Cuba, Cuban revolutionary science, and SftP’s solidarity with Cuba.

To kick it off, we’re highlighting Ecology Under Socialism: Meeting the People’s Needs, published in March 1981. This article is SftP member Richard Levins’s reflections after years working and living in Cuba on the organization and project of building of Cuban science.

During this year’s Socialism Conference, we’ll be sponsoring a session about geoengineering and true solutions to the climate crisis informed by the theory and practice of socialists today. This will be Friday, 9/4, at 2:30 p.m. For those unfamiliar with our chapter’s short but dense history, we have been interested in this unholy union of green and fossil capital for a few months. Most materially, UChicago has put tens of millions of dollars into building a geoengineering research program supporting the interests of notorious stratospheric aerosol injection proponent Dr. David Keith basically from the ground up. This session will not be a debunking of his work but rather the position that expects that science should act on capital’s command to band-aid systemic issues.

Want to know more NOW about geoengineering? Check out this special collection from @sftpmag on the subject!: https://magazine.scienceforthepeople.org/geoengineering-special-issue/
