The other night I decided to join my wife for a trail run at Deer Creek, where I tapped out early and she proceeded her 11 mile journey to the other side of the lake where I’d meet her in Midway hoping to have a cooler full of fish.

Over the next 2 hours while she completed her run, I sat down at the water wetting a line. The first fish of the evening was a smallmouth, not the target species. I then proceeded to hook into 6 more fish but for some reason just couldn’t keep them pinned.

As the sun traded shifts with the moon, I prayed to God for a fish and I didn’t want to meet my wife at the other side of the lake empty handed. After a 30 minute dry spell, I tossed out my last cast waited a few moments and watched my indicator dunk. Next thing I know the line is flying through my fingers and the reel quickly began to scream.

After a great and exhilarating fight, I finally put what I believe to be my biggest bow out of this lake into the net. At last, I knew I would arrive to pick up my wife with cooler filler that turned into a delicious and memorable meal. I truly believe my prayers were answered with this fish, and God provided. This was one blessed bow.

I have carried a hook sharpener for a while now, but more recently I find myself pulling it out of my pack to freshen up my hook points.

I noticed that once I start missing positive hook sets on fish, more often than not I check my hook point and it’s been dulled through the day of fishing. I think it’s a commonly overlooked detail that leads to lost fish and bad hookups.

Maybe you aren’t as bad of angler as you thought, you’re actually just fishing a dull hook! 😉

Fly fishing at night is pretty much like fly fishing during the day, except you can’t see much.

Throw in some w***, nobody knows where anybody is, you hear splashing across the lake, and Paul’s over there hooked up again.

It’s a circus. We highly recommend it.

I have netted several Bear River cutthroat that have surely eclipsed this fish in size, though none of those fish were wild born natives. This specimen however is just that, and is without a doubt my personal best truly native Bear River cutthroat trout. Born in the stream that resides in its native range, and cradled in my hands for a brief moment in time. What an experience it was to encounter such a beautiful example of one of God’s most stunning creations.

Best decision we ever made was leave Kansas and head west! Now our weekends can look like this!

This was such an epic trip! The fishing was pretty slow but we got to explore some new places and see views that make Kansas boys stop in our tracks! What a blessing to have friends that r always down for a quick trip!
