November recap: November felt like a month of small shifts and sweet moments. We said a temporary goodbye to our Aloha school home and moved into “Camp Aloha,” carrying the comfort of familiar teachers, friends, and that little bit of Aloha magic with us. It’s amazing how the same community can make a new space feel warm right away.
We had a play date with two school friends that filled our house with dress up gowns, tiny twirls, and loud singing to Golden. Rainy days showed up too, giving us muddy puddles to jump through and quiet shopping trips as we gathered winter layers for our Thanksgiving travels.
The month ended with a cross-country trip to see family in Maryland and Virginia, a visit full of memories that will get their own post. Looking back, November felt soft and steady, stitched together with the simple moments that make this season feel special. by @sgodwinfilms

We had an epic night at the Sports Emmy’s. Great to share the experience with the talented @juliapolloreno and legend Kyle Brown and his family. We didn’t walk away with statue but we left with a great sense of pride for what we accomplished to get here. So good to take a moment and celebrate the hard work and dedication we have put in with our extended production team over the last 4 years.

It was awesome to see Kyle again. 2years ago, the 7X IRONMAN finisher crossed the finish line at the 70.3 Worlds with ALS. Now he cannot to speak or walk but he showed up with a smile. What an incredible guy who is still reminding us all that we can choose to come alive when faced with tragedy.

Few take aways from the night.

I remembered how to tie a tie.

One of the highlights was seeing one of my sports journalism heroes Bryant Gumbel from HBO Real Sports receive a lifetime achievement award.

The industry is getting more diverse in the people leading productions but the NFL, World Cup, Olympics and ESPN dominate.

Inspiring stories still resonate with this audience

Endurance sports has a way to go to complete with the level of production represented

We belong in the room and we’ll be back.

Big thank you to my wife @sarahaswiss the Godwin girls @lily.godwin_ @lexig.dancer Hartley for understanding when I’m on the road. Could not do this without your love and support.

Thanks to the @ironmantri team and athletes for the passion you put into the sport.

And thank you to our production team Ohana of staff and contractors that always bring their best and continue to push the boundaries on event coverage and storytelling.

Grateful to be on this journey with Julia, Kevin and so many great friends and co-workers. It really does matter who you choose to spend time with. It just makes the work grind and life so much better.

This photo was taken just after midnight on day 2 of racing in Kona. Call time was at 3:30am so it was a 20+ hour shoot day. This team did 2 of those days back to back with a rest day in between.

Shooting an IRONMAN is not easy work. It’s physically and mentally challenging. You’re chasing athletes over 140.6 miles over 3 sports in tough conditions while dealing with technology. You’re thinking about camera settings, lenses, angles, timing, positioning, the light, anticipating moves, communication, locations of athletes…all while telling a race story as a team. This is not for everyone. It takes a special talent and athleticism.

I could write a post about each person on the crew. Everyone pulled through when it counted and this film could not happen without everyone’s sacrifice to the greater goal. We live for these moments. To be asked to rise up to a championship level and deliver on it, I can’t thank this group enough.

We delivered the show to NBC yesterday and I just hit upload to YouTube. Still processing it all but I do have an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. It is fitting that tomorrow is Thanksgiving because I do have a lot to be thankful for. It was one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever worked on but how often do you get to pour all of your energy into one project for over 8 weeks. I will remember this time.

I will have more to say and specific people to thank but right now I am thankful to work with so many talented friends who shot some epic footage in tough conditions. First crew to ever shoot 2 IRONMAN World Championship races back to back with 1 rest day in between races. Beautiful shots.

I am grateful for the athletes that gave us their time for home visits to share their personal stories. That’s what makes it special.

I am thankful for my family that gave me the time and space. Sarah is now 38 weeks pregnant and had to do most of her 3rd trimester alone. I couldn’t do this without her support. My daughter Lily got her drivers license while I was in Kona. I missed dance performances and everyday life with Lily and Lexi. I am thankful for my daughters understanding why I was not present.

Time to rest and reset. Reconnect with family and myself. There’s a lot more I plan to share about the creative process of making long form content (73 min) in a short window of time (4 week edit). There is no way you can do it alone and there is no way you can create art without spending time alone in your thoughts. It’s like going into a cave not to be surrounded by darkness. But more going in to find the light.

I’ve shot many interviews from beginner triathletes to world champs that say the reason they got into the sport was because they watched the NBC documentary. I can say with conviction that the entire team from shooting to editing gave it their all and I am proud of what we put together for the 2022 edition of this historical race. I hope everyone enjoys it and maybe is inspired to take on a challenge that is a little scary but will bring out the best in themselves. Find their limit. I know I did.
