Ari’s first real piece of work was a short film for a high school art project, documenting an Indigenous tribe in Indonesia. What stayed with him was how the camera held onto the small moments that words couldn’t reach. The film itself didn’t survive. It was lost somewhere along the way, and that loss has quietly driven everything since.

“If I have an idea in my head, I just want to see it come to life.”

Before he owned a camera, he’d go round to a mate’s place to borrow theirs, along with their computer. He didn’t have much, so he made do with whatever was in reach. The instinct hasn’t changed. He still makes things for himself first, and whether anyone sees them or not, he’s there for the details.

Growing up with barely any photos or videos of himself as a kid, Ari learnt early how easily moments disappear. Ask him who influences him and he’ll name his future self. Being a barber, moving countries, the people he’s met, finding his way into fashion: every chapter gets documented. He might not understand a moment while he’s in it, but he knows he’ll be grateful he kept it.
