CLUBHOUSE CAMP : We are preparing our annual great immersion into nature at the end of this month. Our Youth Programme is going to the big outside, carefully programmed by Shade with the gracious @sima_kade_retreat , who are sharing their beautiful space with us. We leave the eclectic Clubhouse studio, taking our art-in-works to organic organisations of the forest, mountains and stars. The Magaliesberg offers hiking trails, river paths and rock pools, a place to mediate time in birdsong, rise and rest with the light from flames and build transient homes in the outdoors.

We are working to cover the costs of our camp and reach out to you for donations to help us with transport and food.

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! : ARISE.

The making of the parade was a two week artist residency intensive at @windybrowartscentre with youth from across Joburg’s inner city and beyond, in collaboration with artists and makers. Through the lens of youth photographer Mpho Mukono @mpho.the.eyecon accompanied by a score of migratory birds and an improvisation by the Black Kings @black.kings3 (a teen vocal trio from the Windybrow Arts Centre).

“When we hear sounds of calling, we respond - moving our bodies, imitating expressions. Our arms are free, they flutter, as though we have wings too and along these interwoven colours, we move with the wind. We sing and mimic sounds of freedom. Within this interaction, we are free, we far, yet we are at home.” - Mukono

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala takes to the streets and skies on 08 August 2026 at 10am at the Windybrow Arts Centre.

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! - ARISE, takes to the skies. Just as birds migrate across lands and share messages from afar, we are taking up the airspace.

This year’s theme, ARISE, looks to the seasonal journeys of birds as a provocation for freedom, communication and collective movement. We are filling airwaves with birdsong and collaged soundscapes of the city, the sky and over 350 children and youth in several programmes. A collaborative flocking between local youth organisations; @dlalanje @shade_community @gcebiledlaminifoundation & Johannesburg Society for the Blind, @innovationofexcellence @lefikalaphodiso @fightwithinsight_za @mesorgsa and the @windybrowartscentre

In celebrating music of freedom, we will end the parade with the mighty @kebraethiopia

In the lead up to our parade, the Windybrow Arts Centre has turned into a creative maker-space for all the participants. This two week multi-disciplinary, artist residency/holiday programme ranges from Textile Design with @imbalivisualliteracyproject , Choral Works with Sbusiso Shozi and Muzi Radebe, Physical Theatre with Philani Tenso Mahlanga and Muzi Trust, Street Art with @th3_rivas69 , Site Specific Theatre with @gcebiledlaminifoundation and Parade Direction with @jhbmaskandmovement
The sonic library made in collaboration with the participants, will inform the soundscapes curated by Jarred Parenzee and @muhammeddawjee The programme also invites youth and children to shadow these artists and production teams, to co-design the works and foster intergenerational collaboration.

Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! is presented by @windybrowartscentre and @shade_community in collaboration with organisations and artists from Johannesburg and beyond. Join us at 10am at Windybrow Arts Centre on the 08 August 2026.

Come glide, fly and flutter as we celebrate in the streets and in the skies. 🦅 taken in The Windybrow Theatre by @shade_community

Across the gardens of RMB Latitudes Art Fair, a series of site-responsive installations unfolded to create a sensory "oasis" that extended beyond the exhibition spaces and into the surrounding landscape.

Visitors were invited to move through the grounds as both audience and participant, encountering works that respond to place, scale and season.

In the garden just outside the Manor, the Maker Oasis brought together Imbali Visual Literacy Project and Emely van Heesch in a collaborative interactive installation of floral and organic materials. Alongside the Maker Oasis, The Book Tree offered literacy activities that invited young visitors to pause, read and create.

On the mountainside, Shade and ORMS partnered on a bold printed installation, while Shade's interactive, site-wide game featured Imbali, Emely van Heesch and The Book Tree, encouraging visitors to explore the fair in a playful new way.

Just outside the Glass Marquee, Emely van Heesch presented her Radial Disc Installation, climbing up the mountainscape in a striking site-responsive intervention.

Thank you to our wonderful partners: Shade, ORMS, Imbali Visual Literacy Project, The Book Tree and Emely van Heesch for helping bring the gardens to life.

The game Playce, claiming agency of space through play, draws from a network of artists, youth programmes and archives from Shade’s ecosystem intersecting waste, youth and art.

Curated by Shade for RMB Latitudes Art Fair, Playce collaborates with artists, exhibitors and experimentalists to offer an intergenerational game that allows attendees to go beyond looking and into feeling, hearing, touching and making. The game aims to promote a culture of meaningful engagement with art. By collaging artists with trees, exhibitors with soil, artworks with architecture, and whispers with water to create an oasis for discovery.

To engage in Playce is to interact with a series of immersive installations consolidated into a game of tactility, observation and rewarded curiosities. To be at Playce is to find belonging and carve one’s own space in the art world by offering an omnidirectional exploration for artists, children, adult-children and all those in-between.

RMB Latitudes Art Fair will take place at Shepstone Gardens from 22–24 May 2026. Don't miss your chance to experience Playce! Get your tickets before they sell out! Follow the link in our bio for more info and to purchase tickets.
