This soft blue cotton shirt has been loved and worn so much, the collar had torn through the middle and there were some tears in a sleeve. I used a combination of slow stitched patches on the inside collar and then machine sewed a patch over the outside collar to cover the back of the stitching. I cut a hole in the sleeve where the tears were, and stitched a pretty pink and blue cotton patch to the inside, then embroidered the owner’s monogram in purple. taken in Townsville, Queensland by @shado_62

Yippee-ki-ay… it is done! Did I tell you this was the first project I decided to tackle for slow stitching? Of course, I would always recommend to others to begin on something small and manageable with a high chance of completion. 😂 To keep myself accountable, I announced on social media that I had started so I was compelled to finish!

I personally find unisex cut t-shirts don’t suit my short neck, the sleeves are too long for my short arms and they are generally too long for my short torso - hence the chopping to suit.

T-shirt material simply rolls when cut so there is no fraying and no need to hem or bind unless you want to. I decided to use some ancient bias binding from my stash to finish off the arms and hem of my shirt.

Almost all the embellishments were already in my stash of fabric and notions, OR thrifted locally OR vintage bought from online sellers. Fabrics were a mix of old and new. The handmade doilies were crafted by others and upcycled by me. I was lucky enough to find a huge amount of donated embroidery thread in a local Vinnies so scored it for a bargain price. I also purchased coloured Sashiko thread from an Aussie Etsy seller. I’m partial to variegated colours.

I’ll add another post tomorrow with more info on slow stitching t-shirts and answer questions, if any. taken in Townsville, Queensland by @shado_62

This clever little kit arrived in the mail last week, thanks to its creator, Kara at @mountvicandme 🧵

A brand new product in the MVAM shop, and one of several designs, this is an ideal project to kick start your sewing adventures. Suits those who have never sewn before, experienced machine sewists who want to try slow stitching, and everyone in between and beyond. Also makes a great gift for all ages.

This kit is made from sturdy linen cotton canvas with a tight weave, ideal for withstanding many pin stabbings. I found the instructions logical and very easy to follow. It was SO much fun to decorate!

Here is the link but you can also go to mountvicandme.com and search pin cushion kit.

TWO SHORT STORIES ABOUT VISIBLE MENDING.

A few years ago, I started patching the holes in my partner’s work pants, very carefully selecting plain matching or co-ordinating colours. Then I bought him new work shorts, and used contrasting prints for mending so he wouldn’t wear the patched pants during business hours. To my surprise, he deliberately wore the repaired ones to work - wearing his patches with pride! In fact, he told me not to use boring matching colours. He preferred the prints. So, I’ve started being more outlandish and seeing what I can get away with! 😂

Friend asked me to mend a small rip in her pants. I did an almost invisible repair using the darning stitch on my sewing machine. She requested a contrasting patch. Got to give the customer what she asks for. So I have hand stitched and embellished a cropped doily over the invisible mending. It can be removed if she wishes in future.

Quite enjoying this visible mending trend. Much more fun than trying to blend in! taken in Townsville, Queensland by @shado_62

Silly me, I thought I’d be done with this project by now, but I just can’t help adding more and more to the front. I’ve resolved to take a simpler approach to the back, not least because I’d like to sit back in a chair without too many lumpy bits digging in to me. Currently adding a bit of embroidery in the blank spaces on the front before moving to the back. I’m so keen to finish and wear it so Kara at @mountvicandme can see how much she’s inspired me! Head over to her account to see what she’s up to (Sydney Craft Show next weekend and more workshops on offer in the Blue Mountains).

See pic 2 for the fantastic sewing aid I stumbled upon by accident in Etsy! It’s called a chatelaine which I had never heard of until recently. Before women had pockets, they hung keys and other tools from the waistband of their skirts. Mine is a lovely, fancy Victorian model from Etsy seller Jane of @beadoodads and is the necklace version. It’s been SO useful having all my sewing tools at chest level while sitting on the couch. Jane is the only Aussie seller specialising in chatelaines that I could find on Etsy. My Weapon of Choice t-shirt project is coming along nicely. Just a few more embellishments to the front and “epaulettes” and I can start on the back. I think I won’t completely cover the back, maybe just around the bottom of the shirt with a sprinkling of yo-yos (aka Suffolk puffs) and buttons. I ended up binding the bottom edge with the first piece of vintage bias binding I found. It happened to be green and a few inches longer than required = perfect! I’m already starting to look at other clothing and soft furnishings around my home that I could jazz up. It’s definitely addictive! Various doilies were sourced from local op shops. I also have a LOT of vintage haberdashery in biscuit tins etc in my personal stash, some of which came from @loopylou2266 and @jillywitham8220. Otherwise, I’d like to acknowledge the following.

PLEASE SHARE TO SPREAD THE WORD. THX!

Hello Friends,

As you may know, small businesses are struggling to make sales these days, including my hubby’s trailer business here in Townsville. I can’t urge you all to buy trailers but I can encourage you to buy from retailers of smaller goods.

Today I want to give a shout out to MOUNT VIC AND ME @mountvicandme - one of my all time favourite Aussie small businesses that is doing it extra tough. Not just because of the current economic uncertainty and increased costs. They’ve endured 9 months of planned roadworks in the Blue Mountains, and THEN (just when there was light at the end of the tunnel) big cracks appeared in the Victoria Pass bridge built by convicts from 1830! You can read about it here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-03-09/great-western-highway-shut-convict-bridge/106431056

Traffic that once flowed past Kara’s store, with the potential of stopping to shop, is now directed elsewhere. All the mountain businesses need customers. Most of MVAM’s goodies are Kara’s creations (she’s a graphic designer with terrific sense of humour) and include tea towels, bags, socks, aprons and jackets. Her t-shirts are legendary! For Australiana, political humour and social justice issues, this is the place! Upcycled clothing, accessories and books abound. Check it out!

Start your Christmas shopping early (like I have) and pay for it in increments. Afterpay is available for purchases over $100 and there is flat rate shipping of $10.95 no matter how much you buy! Subscribe to get 15% off your first order.

Visiting the beautiful Blue Mountains? The store is open Fridays and Saturdays at:
115a Great Western Hwy
Mount Victoria NSW 2786

This is an unsponsored post by me, Sharon, a dedicated customer only. And if you do happen to need a trailer, please consider @stonegate.townsville 😊 by @shado_62

Thought I’d better post an update to keep you all (and ME!) interested. I have a tendency to start and stop but I really want to wear this shirt so I MUST finish. This tee was bought new from Mount Vic and Me’s online store. I’m not a big fan of crew necks unless it’s really cold (rare in Townsville). A little while ago, Kara from @mountvicandme posted that it’s perfectly ok to chop t-shirts to suit oneself. Of course! 🤯😂 Why did I need it pointed out? Around the same time, Kara posted about some cushions she started making as a kind of therapy. Stitching fabrics together, layering odds and ends, it really is enjoyable to slow down and make something unique with your imagination and your hands. It’s also a fun and practical way to use fabric scraps that might otherwise go to landfill.

Scroll through to see progress pics. Hopefully, the next post will be the final result! by @shado_62

Don’t tell my family, but… I received some great vintage buttons in the mail today. Yes, I know I already have lots but these are DIFFERENT! The metal “S” button may have swayed me. They are pictured here with some fabric from my stash, some of which came from Kara at @mountvicandme who has some fantastic craft kits made up and ready in her online store. The buttons are from @lilypilyvintage - Cathy has lots of lovely goodies in her Etsy shop (quite a few of my clutch purses may or may not have come from there). The buttons will be a nice addition to a project I’m working on. Stay tuned! by @shado_62
