I had such a great time at @thejazzarts Jazz Arts Charlotte working with the incredible faculty, TAs, and students! I was grateful to have a faculty that allowed me to slip away from my own camp, @jazz_up_institute , for a couple of days to make music, teach, and connect with such a wonderful community and organization! It was awesome to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones in our jazz community.

I had an amazing time at @uakronjazz as part of the Jazz Festival last week! It was fantastic to work with so many promising students, meet incredible faculty, and catch up with trumpeter Donald Malloy aka @wave_magnetic . One night only — Sharel Cassity takes the stage at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall as part of the University of Akron’s JazzWeek 26. This is a show you won’t want to miss.

Sharel Cassity is a nationally acclaimed saxophonist and trailblazer for women in jazz. Named DownBeat Magazine’s “Rising Star Alto Saxophone” of 2023, she has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning America, and The Colbert Report, and is an inductee of the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame and a recipient of the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award.

Throughout her career, Sharel has collaborated with Grammy-winning artists including Jennifer Hudson, Aretha Franklin, and Natalie Merchant, and performed alongside NEA Jazz Masters Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, and Dee Dee Bridgewater. She has been mentored by jazz legends Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, and James Moody, and has appeared as a featured soloist with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

As a bandleader, Sharel has released six albums that have topped the JazzWeek charts and earned praise in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, JazzTimes, and DownBeat Magazine. A Juilliard graduate on full scholarship, she currently serves as Director of Jazz Performance at the University of Virginia.

Sharel tours with the Sharel Cassity Quartet, leads the all-female project Alliance, and is a member of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. She also directs “Jazz Up!”, her non-profit program preparing high school students for collegiate and professional jazz. A proud Yamaha and Vandoren Performing Artist, Sharel Cassity stands as one of the most vital and inspiring voices in contemporary jazz.

Sharel Cassity is a celebrated saxophonist, composer, educator, and recording artist, recognized as the “Rising Star Alto Saxophone” of 2023 by DownBeat Magazine. With nearly two decades of global performance experience, she has made her mark as both a bandleader and sideman, collaborating with renowned artists including Wynton Marsalis, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Nicholas Payton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Paquito D’Rivera, Jimmy Heath, Michel Camilo, and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars, among others.

Steeped in the jazz tradition, Sharel maintains a prominent presence as a jazz artist while also dedicating herself to education as the Director of Jazz at the University of Virginia and through her non-profit program, Jazz Up. She performs at a professional level across both classical and jazz genres on saxophone, flute, and clarinet. Sharel is committed to building upon the legacies of jazz masters while remaining attuned to contemporary and future musical developments.
