2021 was a year of big change for me. I changed my career on a whim. My work in this platform changed a lot as I slowly transitioned from a bookstagrammer to an artist. I'm grateful for all the support you guys have shown me through the process. Hope you all have a great year ahead. Good and bad things will always be a part of our lives but I hope that the good outweighs the bad this year. I'm sharing some of my work from last year.

What are your new year resolutions?

Kenya happened in the most chaotic way possible.

We were supposed to go to the Philippines, but visa processes in Bangladesh always feel like a relationship that’s “it’s complicated.” We were still waiting for an appointment date when my husband suddenly went, “What if we do Kenya instead?” Five days later, we were on a flight.

Nothing started smoothly though. There was a massive protest on the day of our flight and we genuinely thought we were going to miss it. Then after finally reaching Nairobi, we found out our luggage didnot make it with us. We literally trusted a random Bolt driver with our entire luggage situation because we were already meant to leave Nairobi the next morning. The bags finally reached us on the third day, all the way in Masai Mara.

And yes, we finally arrived in THE Masai Mara.

I wish I could say this had been my dream since I was a child, but honestly, my love for wildlife is fairly new. A little over three years ago, I barely even knew where Masai Mara was. Then one random day, I woke up on the ride side of the bed and suddenly, photographing wildlife became a part of me before I even noticed it happening.

Standing there in Masai Mara, I think that’s when it really hit me. I’ve not just been photographing wildlife. I’ve been going into their world for a while now, always a visitor.

And honestly, being in the land of The Lion King made it more surreal in the best way possible.

This might just be my craziest personal content yet. I’ve never edited 45 photos for a single post before. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever even selected 30 photos for one post.

And the funny thing is, whenever I’ve had a big batch of photos to edit before, it usually took me months. Because, you know, I have a life. Work and all the other things that somehow need to happen in between. This time, though, I somehow managed to select, edit and put together 45 photos in less than a month.

There were 106 photos in my initial selection, by the way. So getting down to 45 was already an achievement. Then came the whole “Instagram only allows 20 slides” problem, which meant figuring out collages without completely ruining the flow of the photos.

These are birds from across Kenya from Masai Mara, Amboseli, Naivasha to Nakuru. And honestly, the sheer variety and richness of birdlife across these places made narrowing it down this much harder. And yes, there are 45 of them. I really did try to narrow it down.

Yes, I make surreal art. But it all starts with something ordinary.

Kinabatangan River in Borneo was such an experience. We were supposed to stay beside the river, but because the water still hadn’t gone down from the rainy season, it felt like we were living on it instead. Every trip from our room to the dining area meant walking along pathways hidden beneath the water. Even from the balcony, there was always something to see, birds everywhere, monkeys and civet all day long.

But the real magic happened out on the river. Over the three days we stayed there, we took many boat rides, never quite knowing what would appear around the next bend. Hornbills seemed to be everywhere. We ended up seeing six of the eight species found along the river. We watched orangutans in the wild, spotted proboscis monkeys, and even came across Borneo pygmy elephants.

I don’t think I was fascinated with any single sighting. It was the feeling of being in a place where wildlife is still woven into everyday life. A place where hornbills fly overhead, monkeys move through the trees, and elephants still roam free. It was truly surreal.

Do you sometimes feel like you’re being watched?

I did. I used to feel that a lot during Covid. My husband was working at an Aussie company and would sleep early, and I’d stay up late at night working alone. The house would be completely silent, and every now and then, it felt like I wasn’t the only one there.

That idea stayed in my head for a long time, waiting for the right moment to take shape.

In 2022, while walking through Panam Nagar in Sonargaon with my first Sony camera, something clicked. The old mansion, the emptiness, the history in the walls, it all felt like the perfect place for that lingering presence to exist. That’s when the idea of this image truly came alive.

I shot the background back then, and years later photographed myself separately and put everything together in Adobe Photoshop.

When in ‘āĻĻāĻžāĻĻ⧁āϰ āĻŦāĻžāĻĄāĻŧāĻŋ’ - which translates to paternal grandfather’s home.

When I started wildlife photography, I, unexpectedly found out, that my paternal grandfather’s home in Rajshahi, where I spent half of my winter vacations and most of my Eid holidays, is actually a hub for birds.

I only knew three birds: āĻ•āĻžāĻ•, āĻļāĻžāϞāĻŋāĻ•, āϟāĻŋāϝāĻŧāĻž (house crow, common myna, rose-ringed parakeet) before I started photographing birds. That was my entire bird world. Needless to say, I didn’t really notice birds.

Discovering that so many birds exist in this country, and many of them in Rajshahi, completely baffled me. Everytime someone from the wildlife community now, asks where my paternal grandfather’s home is, and I say Rajshahi, they smile and say - “āĻĒāĻžāĻ–āĻŋāϰ āĻĻ⧇āĻļ⧇āϰ āĻŽāĻžāύ⧁āĻˇâ€ (She comes from the land of birds.)

I had been seeing photos of Rajshahi’s birds ever since I started photographing wildlife, but life and work kept pulling me away. This year, when one of my cousins was heading back abroad, I finally went to Rajshahi, and went out to photograph.

I photographed birds I had only ever seen in pictures.

I went again in May, this time for the Little Tern and the Indian Paradise Flycatcher. It felt surreal.

I never knew there were so many ways to rediscover my grandfather’s home, but somehow, through wings and feathers, I did.

Over the past three years, my husband and I have been so much behind our cameras that we almost always forget to take photos of ourselves. Add in the Asian heat and our giant camera bags, and you hardly feel like posing when you already look, well, sun-baked.

But last night, I stumbled across a handful of drone shots from our trips, and it felt unreal that we were there. Maybe next time, we’ll remember to take a few more photos of us.

I saw a reel about wildlife photography the other day - how calm and quiet everything feels when you step into nature, until the bird flies off or the wild turns away. That was exactly what my Borneo trip felt like in the beginning.

From the start, it wasn’t easy, getting permits, scrambling for last-minute bookings, and not being able to find specialized bird guides because they were all booked already. I had to go with general ones, and it didn’t feel like the smooth, dreamy wildlife photography experience I had imagined.

But now, looking back, editing these photos I’ve taken, letting it all sink in — I realize, I was in Borneo. One of the most biodiverse places on earth. A dream destination for any wildlife enthusiast. And even though I was hoping for more (even though there’s no end to hoping in wildlife), a better wildlife experience, these photos have become deeply nostalgic. I just feel lucky enough to be there.

If you love taking photos, you know this:
December and January come with fog,
with mornings that promise a sunrise but keep it hidden.
You wake up early and still miss the light.
By midday, the sun is low, the shadows deep.

But December also brings something else.
Stillness.
Especially if you’re used to heat and humidity—
this calm feels like a gift.
For once, the air is soft,
and the silence stays a little longer.
That’s why we chose Nepal in December.

We did so much—
wandered the jungles of Chitwan,
trekked through Ghandruk village,
climbed down from the World Peace Pagoda
to float in silence on Phewa Lake.

We crossed the long suspension bridge at Rupa Lake,
ate the best fish by Begnas.
We missed the snow in Chandragiri,
missed Everest in the fog of Nagarkot.

But that’s the thing.
Some places give you pictures—
Nepal gave me stories.
