Completed all my homework for this month's @thekraftingclub sessions! For this month's projects, we did digital invitations and activity mats. Sonnel honestly is an awesome teacher and I am honing my creative skills! The community of current crafters is cool too. #thekraftingclub. by @shaimyst

Cancer turned my world upside down. In 2019, I heard 7 words that changed my life forever: "Gem, I'm sorry but you have cancer."

My life, up until that point was going according to plan. Yes, I admit, with some delays and twists and turns...but still mostly according to plan. So.... What was this? It most definitely was NOT on the plan! Every treatment day, every medication, every new specialist, every problem, every surgery, every ache, every pain, every side effect seemed to hammer home that we had veered off course so far that there was no hope of getting back on the path that was part of the plan.

But eventually, a second would go by with some laughter; a minute, with music soothing my frayed edges; an hour, with someone messaging me to see how I was doing; a day, with someone calling to pray for me or just say they were thinking of me; a week, with my husband and family members caring for me with love; a month, with nurses, doctors and other people in the hospital greeting me with smiles as they tirelessly fought for me...for my life; a year, of days of pain and new challenges and days of joy. On and on, until we go 5 years, and I was still here. The plan had changed, was obliterated but....I was still here.

The plan changed drastically back in 2019. And continues to change. Some of the changes are small and some are huge. I went back to work. I joined @knowyourlemons as a volunteer breast health educator and it's been awesome.I saw new people, old and young, join my family. I made new friends and strengthened bonds with old ones. I learned new skills. I took a chance and shared my story with @worldcancerday in 2024, with the hope that my story will help someone know that they were not alone in this journey.

Cancer may have turned my world upside down, but in the process, it gave me a new perspective on my life...and on plans😄.

Today is World Cancer Day. Let's work together to #CloseTheCareGap!

Things you can do:

1. Sign the Call to action asking governments around the world to work on the root causes that lead to the gap in care. It's quick and easy, takes about 1 minute if that long, (link in my bio)m

2. Learn about cancer. Education and access to education helps to close the gap! For example, you can check out @knowyourlemons to learn more about signs of breast cancer and contact me if you want to have a class on the signs for your club, church, company, family etc, in Barbados.

3. Read the stories of individuals, families & friends, caregivers and healthcare providers impacted by cancer and involved in helping to close the gap by showing the human side of cancer at the @worldcancerday website. (The link to my story is in my bio).

4. Donate to local and international organisations involved in the fight against cancer.

5. Share what you have learned and ask others to join the effort to close the care gap.

How can you help to #CloseTheCareGap?

One way is through education!

Educate yourselves, your friends and family, your colleagues and your community. Not having access to information is one of the root issues when it comes to the Care Gap.

Here is an example of how access to information and being educated about cancer can change things. When the founder of @knowyourlemons lost both of her grandmothers and a close friend to breast cancer, she sought out information to learn more about the disease and realized something strange:

There wasn’t a single resource that communicated all the symptoms, how to self-exam, and how to determine when to get screened.

So she got a PhD in design, and used her savings to start what is today the only global breast cancer charity dedicated to education for early detection.

Using her design skills she researched, tested, and developed the most popular global education program in history that overcomes fear, taboo, and literacy issues. It’s incredibly inclusive, working with any age, race, ethnicity or gender.

Since 2017 @knowyourlemons has:

🍋educated 1.85 billion people online

🍋educated over 100,000 people in-person through trained volunteer educators

🍋designed the campaign in over 30 languages

🍋created an award-winning app designed to improve early detection (and it has!)

🍋trained over 850 volunteer educators in over 60 countries

🍋saved a lot of lives around the world through empowering and creative education.

Help us #CloseTheCareGap. Educate and be educated.
