RESEARCH NEWS šŸ’” Researchers at @sydney_uni, funded by Shake It Up Australia, have made a groundbreaking discovery that could pave the way for new treatments to slow or stop the progression of Parkinson’s disease.

The team, led by Professor Kay Double, have identified a fault in a protein called SOD1, which normally protects brain cells but becomes dysfunctional in Parkinson’s disease.

ā€œOur research identifies faulty SOD1 as a critical target for Parkinson’s therapies,ā€ said Professor Double. ā€œBy restoring the normal function of this protein, we may be able to slow, or even halt, the progression of the disease... these findings open an exciting new avenue for treatment development.ā€

Read our Q&A at the link in our bio and learn more about what this could mean for people living with Parkinson's disease ā¬†ļø

Shake It Up CEO Vicki Miller reflects on the last 15 years of funding Parkinson's research, and looks ahead at what's on the horizon, from the role of AI, to testing for Parkinson's.

Earlier detection, better treatments, personalised care – every single step of progress improves quality of life and brings us closer to a cure. Whether you have been with us since day one; or have just recently joined the Shake It Up community, your contribution plays an important role in getting us there. Marty Cobcroft and Andy Payne are Australian music veterans who first met in the early 1990s. Together, they share a personal mission to make a difference. With the release of their song, ā€˜Still’, from the doubleTROUBLE EP, the two musicians will donate 50% of all net royalties to Shake It Up to propel research.

ā€œI’ve been living with Parkinson’s since 2018ā€, Marty told us. ā€œAndy’s mum and Grandmother also lived with Parkinson’s, so it’s as personal as it gets, as far as motivation goes. Even if it raises a modest amount, it will only benefit us all – those who live with Parkinson’s, and those who are our carers, health professionals and volunteers.ā€

The song was inspired by Marty's wife Amanda, and he hopes it resonates with people across the community.

"My wonderful, caring kind wife, Amanda heard me having a coughing fit over 6 hours one night and just quietly came and held my shoulders until it eased. There have been many times where this has occurred, hence the lyric: Don’t forget the times when I shook against the storms / Your hands on my shoulders, our eyes fixed on that hill."

We spoke with Marty to find out more about what inspired the song, and their passion for supporting research.

"I think the work that the Shake It Up Australia Foundation does both directly and indirectly is immensely encouraging and maybe even a little miraculous", he says.

Visit the link in our bio to find out more, or to preview & purchase the song. šŸŽµ

September is #DystoniaAwarenessMonth. Dystonia is a prominent symptom for some people with Parkinson’s, particularly those who have a mutation in the Parkin gene - more research is needed to understand why.

Some experts estimate that 30% of people living with Parkinson’s disease experience dystonia as an early symptom or as a complication of treatment.

To understand more about this symptom, including causes, treatments, different types, and further resources, swipe through above or visit the link in our bio

Shake It Up is supporting The Alfred Hospital Movement Disorders Program’s recruitment of patients for a phase one clinical trial in Parkinson’s disease. With support from The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Longevity Biotech Australia is developing a new medication that’s focused on modulating the immune system.

The study is called Longevity: A Two-Part Single and Multiple Ascending Dose Trial of LBT-3627, and the researchers are investigating the safety and tolerability of LBT-3627. The trial will explore how this potential Parkinson’s medication acts in the body at different doses.

Clinical trials like this are essential in unlocking the medical breakthroughs that could change the lives of more than 200,000 Australians living with Parkinson's today, and all those diagnosed in the future.
