returning from a lovely short tour with Alex Homan @alexvanhoman . Alex is a treat and inspiration, and so is traveling around and playing music. thanks to everyone who organized shows, played with us, and housed us. there was a certain fluidity and whimsy present which felt really special, the weather was jamming along and hitting the harmonies spot on. the north east inspires me.

I love the bass clarinet. Grateful to play it in those various spaces and grateful for this set that I need not a single cable to perform. it was an absolute delight to play winds together with toussaint and carolyn hietter on this trip as well (videos slides 3/4)

I only took a single photo of the leaves out the window of car, here’s some videos that Alex took of bits of my set, first slide recorded by @lilhinx

Future plans- Ashley Paul, Jake Pugh, and I have a trio called world room that plays in Asheville tomorrow (10.12) opening for Horse Lords and Brett Naucke. more tonal wind but this time there’s a computer as well. I love playing with Jake and Ashley

“The songs on Sham’s self-titled fifth album, according to Shane Justice McCord, who leads the ever-shifting Asheville art-folk ensemble, are like “short-term little blips.” Each one takes as its subject a particular feeling, moment, or vista, considering it from multiple angles at once, with near-forensic attention to detail: the materials of household objects, the incursions of memory, the shades of regret or apprehension or connectedness, the smells of flowers wafting in, the sounds of animals outside, the omnipresent background of slow ecological collapse and the strange beauty to be found in the wreckage.

Sham is both an expression of Shane’s singular sensibility as a songwriter and a document of a wildly thriving creative community. Recorded in sheds and basements, rehearsed in parks and barns, graced with guitar and vocals from Mikey Powers, piano and vocals from Dave Portner, upright bass from Charlie Boss, violin from Libby Rodenborough, saxophone from Ashley Paul, and woodwind arrangements from NYC composer Sammy Weissberg, the lone musician whose house McCord couldn’t reach in a short drive. These musicians play together constantly, in too many configurations to count, and their deep bonds imbue the music with conversational familiarity even in its moments of surreal dissonance.”

hello hello
the new sham album is out today
it is called Sham

I wrote about the process more extensively on Bandcamp

it was the collaborative effort of expanding acoustic guitar songs into recorded form... plain and simple...
with the Asheville homies as well as Sammy Weissberg's wind trio in NYC. each song started live as a duo to tape machine and expanded from there.

bits of my life and spirit scattered in the lyrics, it feels like a mosaic of different small moments spanning the course of 5 years. clear clear images of montenegro, california, berlin, asheville, belgium, maryland, western mass within it all.

APLR is pleased to host a lounge-style listening party for Sham’s new self-titled album on Thursday, September 24th. The album drops on Friday, September 25th, so this is a special opportunity to hear it here first! Shannon will be offering a tea service as well.

I hiked this volcano in Guatemala with my tape camera in February, then Corey hiked the same volcano virtually from a computer in Baltimore and merged the two. Link to full video on YouTube in bio

New Sham album, titled Sham, out September 25. A song called In Ordinary Fashion is out today along with a video by Corey Hughes @coreyhughes2030 (YouTube link in bio).
