POSTS STORIES REELS

Hello Bookstagram, I’m Ross and it’s nice to meet you. If we haven’t met, come say hello!

I was inspired by one of @tellmebry ‘s posts and decided I ought to do an introduction here too.

I want to make more carousels but open to thoughts or ideas on what you’d wanna see

Hi I’m Ross! And I love making bookish content and yapping about our favourite books. Come say hi!

Hi I’m Ross! Here are some recent reads I’d recommend! In order of appearance:

The Summer Boy by Philippe Besson - summer queer awakening, semi-autobiographical

Trad Wife by Sarah Langan - journalist investigate trad wife influence, things get monstrous (it’s a horror)

A Forsaken Prophecy by Stacey McEwan - Book 2 in the Artisan Trilogy, think Peaky Blinders meets a bit of ATLA meets romance

Bird Deity by John Morrissey a cosmic horror / spec fiction novel we found via the Brisbane Writers Festival. Short, but packs a punch

Theodora’s Tea Shop by Christy Anne Jones. Think Howls Moving Castle but Howl’s a diva witch. Cosy fantasy

Homebound by Portia Elan, a coming of age sci-fi/spec fiction novel novel with four interconnected lives

Waiting on a Friend by Natalie Adler - this was pitched to me as Angels in America meets Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and that’s apt

The Final Six by Akinari Asakura - think the Hunger Games x a Job Interview. These candidates REALLY want that job and one may stop at nothing.

These are the books that led me to where I am today. What does yours look like?

Hi I’m Ross and I am reviewing every book I own. THE GUEST LIST BOOK REVIEW by Lucy Foley.

This was one of those books that found me rather than me finding it. My mum passed it over to me the day she finished it and didn’t give me more context beyond just to read it.

It’s a mystery novel set during a destination wedding off the coast of Ireland. When a storm rolls in not long after all the guests arrive, there’s a power outage and that’s how the book opens. It’s a classic what happens next moment, because you know there’s going to be a body and now you want to know, who did it, how and their motive.

It’s a multi-POV novel featuring guests at the wedding who in turn reveal their connections to the bride and groom (who are together an upper class publisher and a TV personality, so expect plenty of class commentary there).

Everyone’s backstories help to add a bit of weight to the narrative and ultimately reveal the connections to not just the bridal party but to the wider story - like any good mystery should. It’s the unravelling of the story that ultimately makes a good thriller and this one had me guessing the whole way through.

If you’ve read it, what did you think?

Hi I’m Ross! This week was a lot of ACOTAR 6 fun at the midnight launch where I met so many wonderful bookish people and even a Suriel. I made some good progress on my reading too, plus tried some delicious new food.

What are you reading, watching, listening to or trying out atm?

Come launch A Court of Splintered Harmony at midnight with us!

@qbdbooks hosted the Brisbane book community to an evening of performances, arts, talks, drinks and chats to celebrate the release of ACOTAR 6.

Let me try and live it again, what a night and met so many incredible people!

Highlight was probably dancing with @staceymcewanbooks and company to Love Story.

Hi I’m Ross! I’m reviewing every book I own and this is day four. I’m still working out how I want to review these. Some of you have asked for a number out of 5? But I’m sorta of the mindset that I’d only recommend a book that I actually liked, so I think I’m going to recommend that you read something if you like something similar to it?

Anyway - the Girl with All The Gifts is an action-packed zombie-read. If you liked The Last of Us you’ll find a lot of love here with Carey’s work. There’s great set-pieces, compassionate characters that you root for and a breakneck pace that carried along at a clip.

I know it’s been made into a movie (with Glenn Close?) but I haven’t seen it - tell me if you have! - but the book is still so vivid in my head. I can’t even recall what made me pick this one out. I think it was the cover, but it’s stood proudly on my shelf for years and been lended out to friends a few times.

If you’ve read it, let me know what you thought!

Hi, I’m Ross! I am yet to find a bookstore that I didn’t like. I think it’s almost impossible to walk past a bookshop and not go inside?

Even when I tell myself I’m not gonna read any more books because I have so many at home? Yet I keep finding myself inside a bookstore?

I’m writing this to you from inside a bookstore
