The sound expands. The story continues. The 2026 Gateways Fall Festival is HERE. 💜

October 9–12, we return to Rochester for four days celebrating the depth, range, and expansion of Black artistry in classical music.

Now you already know: Gateways is not just a concert weekend. It’s a gathering. It’s Rochester in community. It’s Black artistry expanding what classical music can hold. It’s something to witness together.

This year’s Festival moves from the concert hall to the sanctuary, from classical repertoire to jazz, soul, scholarship, family discovery, and the next generation of young musicians.

ChamberSoul Center Stage: Classically trained cellist and vocalist Shana Tucker brings ChamberSoul—her blend of classical, jazz, soul, folk, and pop—to Gateways. A former Cirque du Soleil performer, Tucker transforms originals, jazz standards, and music made famous by Roberta Flack, Stevie Wonder, and others through heartfelt storytelling.

Tradition meets virtuosity: Continuing Gateways’ tradition of presenting exceptional pianists—rooted in the legacy of founder Armenta Hummings Dumisani—Steinway Artist Ric’key Pageot presents Classic Black, spanning three centuries of music by Black composers, revealing the depth, range, and endurance of the classical tradition through a captivating evening of solo piano.

Black composers. Brilliant music: Bring the children you love to a family concert with pianist Ric’key Pageot, and discover what becomes possible when their ideas enter the room. Through performance and storytelling, they’ll discover music by influential Black composers Florence Price, William Grant Still, and the Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

A Sacred Celebration: Gateways turns the stage into a SANCTUARY in this afternoon celebration of hymns, spirituals, gospel, sacred jazz, and classical music. Rooted in classical artistry but moving freely across traditions, the program features Queen of the Violin Kersten Stevens, trumpeter Herb Sm by @shanatucker

Elizéon and Tucker will re-mount this performance as a site-specific adaptation at Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center. "When We were Queens…" is a multidisciplinary performance in two parts—two solos in dialogue. The piece explores how the bodies of women of color from the African diaspora carry personal and collective histories. Together, Elizéon and Tucker reclaim a shared lineage of violence, power, and resilience, creating an immersive performance and relational practice between performers and audiences.⁠
