I think one of the biggest lessons travel has taught me is that it is a privilege. For so many reasons.

Today I travel with a Belgian passport, but I wasn’t born with one. I grew up with a Russian passport, and I know how much a passport can determine where you’re allowed to go and how you’re treated at the airports.

Travelling around Asia also reminded me that many people have never even left their village simply because they simply can’t afford to.

Not everyone has the time to travel. Many are caring for children, parents, or working jobs where taking time off simply isn’t an option.

I’m also grateful for my health. I can handle a 25-hour flight, hike mountains, and walk around in 37°C heat. Not everyone can.

Speaking several languages has also opened so many doors. It has made travelling, connecting with people, and navigating the world much easier.

I’ve worked incredibly hard to make these trips happen. I studied, worked many jobs, saved money, made sacrifices, and chose experiences over things.

But I’ve also been fortunate to have opportunities, good health, the freedom that comes with my new passport, and no major caregiving responsibilities.

Travel is one of the greatest gifts in my life.

Unfortunately, it’s also a privilege that not everyone has access to. So every time I travel, I appreciate everything that made that journey possible and I wish all people had this privilege 🫶🏼

As a girls’ running club, we’re joining Antwerp Running Crew for a shakeout run on Saturday, October 17th, and we’d love for you to join us! 🫶🏼

My first time taking part in the epic @refugeewalk event and directly as part of the organization @vluchtelingenwerkvl 🫶🏼

What a unique day of solidarity, love and hope it was! Together, 3,560 participants and 160 volunteers raised €750,000 for people who have lost their homes around the world.

I woke up at 5 am this day and shared my time between the communications in the morning and the cheer team in the afternoon: 6 hours of jumping, cheering and screaming my lungs out!😄

I lost my voice, and my feet were completely exhausted and in pain but it was absolutely worth every second 📢

The most beautiful moment for me was seeing the joy in the eyes of my Afghan refugee students from the Dutch Speaking Club who came to volunteer. I could see the happiness, love and joy in their eyes. They felt included, loved and valued, a feeling they do not experience often enough. For a moment, they felt at home, far away from home.

And that’s what the Refugee Walk is about. The 3,560 walkers, and all the friends and families who supported their fundraising, share these values.

Events like this show that so many people truly care and have solidarity.

And that gives me hope❤️
