After sitting for 6 months gathering dust, I figured it was finally time to embark on the DC2 rebuild. I’ve collected a lot of parts since the start of the year, so the first step was to strip the car down and mock up the important bits before I can send the car off to fabrication.

I started by removing all the unnecessary stuff from the engine bay like fuel lines, harnesses, catch can lines and so on. The engine will have to come in and out a few times during fab, so I wanted to make that as easy as possible.

Next was the fun bit; mocking up the Rotrex C38-92 supercharger. The @bypracing brackets and tensioner to suit an 8-rib belt fit perfectly, and the supercharger tucks nicely away where the AC compressor would be on a road car. It’s hard to believe this little thing will give me literally double the power I had before, it should be fun to drive 😊

Next the car will be off to @notscaredfabrication for Frankie to work his magic. He’ll be doing front tubs so I can run proper sized A050s at a decent ride height, a tube front end which will unbolt from the car to make engine swaps a breeze, as well as all the piping and intercooler to get the supercharger plumbed in.

I also gave the garage a good makeover recently; a properly sealed and insulated door with epoxy floors has made it a super clean and nice place to be, and I’ve even got an AC unit in there so I’m always comfortable during the hot days or cold mornings 👌 by @shane_technologicmse

@speedeventserieswa rounds 2 & 3 at @collie_motorplex

Another brilliant weekend in the books, Collie again cements its place as the best track in WA (perhaps Australia! 🤔)

I'd made a few changes to the car to try and stop it spinning up the inside front wheel during hard cornering; adding a rear swaybar (literally some steel pipe from Bunnings bolted to the rear twist beam), disconnecting the front swaybar, and changing to heavier front springs. While not completely fixed, the car has a lot better drive out of corners, and on the Friday practice I cut my long track PB by almost a whole second, getting down to a 1:24.6. It also lifts the inside rear rather high on cornering now!

Round 2 (long track) on Saturday had the best track conditions I've seen in a long time, and PBs were being smashed all over the place. I finished the day first in the under 1.6L class with another 1:24.6, bettering my practice time by a few hundredths.

Round 3 (short track) on Sunday started off nice and cold, and it took me a bit to get back into the driving groove, but by the end of the day I'd cut 1.3s off my short track PB, getting down to a 54.33. That was only good enough for second in the under-1.6L class, the shitbox whisperer himself @blakescantlebury pipped me by 0.05s in his Honda Jazz. That morning he'd removed one of his wing mirrors and the windscreen wipers/motor to save weight, clearly that made all the difference!

Blake and I had great battles all weekend, including both being told off by the stewards for "slightly exceeding" the track limits in our push to find every last hundredth 😂 This is by far the most fun I've had in a racecar, and tbh I haven't even started rebuilding the Integra!

Next step for the Mazda is moving to 225 front tyres, and adding some caster to try and stop it murdering the outside edges of the front tyres, even with -5 degrees of camber... Will see how it all goes at Wanneroo in May by @shane_technologicmse

Round 1 of the 2026 @speedeventserieswa at @collie_motorplex

After a 3 month break from racing, I was itching to get down to Collie this weekend for round 1 of the WA Speed Event Series, held as a combined sprint of the Collie short & long tracks. This would also be the first test of the Mazda 2 after a couple months of prep, racing in the under 1.6L class.

Friday was a practice day on long track, and I squeezed in a bunch of sessions in the heat. It took a couple of sessions to get the car dialled in (seating position, damper settings), but it was amazing fun to drive. After some advice on how to properly drive shitboxes from the Jazz king himself @blakescantlebury, I ended the day with a 1:25.5, which is very quick for this type of car around Collie!

Saturday was race day, and what a battle it was. Mainly a battle with the heat, 37 degrees in a race suit is not fun! About 5L of water and electrolytes later, and after 4 runs of the combined tracks, I finished second in the under 1.6L class only 0.09s behind Blake in the Jazz.

You can't ask for a closer battle than that, and that's exactly why these "slow" cars are so much fun and why I'm so happy there's a 1.6L class this year!

Overall it was a great weekend; the car performed faultlessly (and only used 20L of fuel for the whole 2 days), the van towed beautifully and was super comfortable to sleep in, and the event ran smoothly despite the heat. Already counting down the days until we do it again in April! by @shane_technologicmse

About a month ago I picked up a Mercedes Vito with the intention of building it out into a basic campervan that can tow the racecar. I currently tow with a Ford Everest and it’s amazing, but I camp quite often for racing so I wanted something with more space inside, and better set up for exploring the countryside outside of racing. The Vitos seem to have a great reputation, and this one was super clean with only 60km on the clock.

The first step was to make sure I can sleep comfortably in it, so I sound deadened and insulated the cargo area before installing a double bed using Ikea Skorva extendable beams. I’ve left enough height under the bed for all my tools, race gear, and a spare K20 on its side if needed.

I shortened the mattress by 250mm to fit it in the van sideways, but I can still comfortably stretch out on the diagonal. It’s super comfy, and I actually have space to sit up without banging my head into the roof unlike in the Everest 👌

Next step is to sleep in it for a few events and figure out how the rest of the fitout should work. I want to squeeze in a couple seats, a fridge, kitchen, sink, electrical system, storage cupboards, quite a lot!

I also finished up the Mazda 2 ready for round 1 of the WA Speed Event Series next weekend in Collie. I got the car back from Frankie at @notscaredfabrication, as always he did a killer job and knocked out a half cage that gives me all the room in the world for seating position. I’m a lot happier having a proper harness mounting solution now too. The custom CNC machined brake booster delete I designed also arrived from China in no time, the quality was great and it fit perfectly. The brakes are now all bled and the pedal feels amazing, can’t wait to test it out on track next weekend! by @shane_technologicmse

#2026yearoftheshitbox

With the DC2 out of action this year while it gets a rebuild, I’ve turned my focus to preparing my Mazda 2 budget thrasher for @speedeventserieswa, which for 2026 has established an under-1.6L class. This class will see my Mazda 2 compete against other prime examples of motorsport pedigree like Blake’s Honda Jazz, as well as a B16 Civic, Corolla GTI, Mazda MX5, and a gaggle of Excel Cup cars. This is the most I’ve ever looked forward to a year of racing; every car is around the same weight and power so I’m expecting a tonne of close battles on track.

So how to make this faster for cheap? Less weight, more grip, better braking.

For weight loss, I pulled out everything that wasn’t necessary. Muffler, battery (swapped to lithium), HVAC, passenger seat, crash bars, radio, window motors, plastics, all gone. I think I’m currently down to 870kg, so hopefully I’ll still sneak in under 900kg once the half cage is installed.

For grip, nothing beats Advan’s best, so I got a bunch of free 205/50R15 A050s from my friend Russell. They all have 20-30% tread left but they should just get me through the year. I also added 15mm spacers to increase the front track width by 30mm, another easy way to add grip (thanks physics!)

I also lowered the car another 20-25mm and completely reset the suspension. I’ve ended up with 40mm bump and 40mm droop front, and 55mm bump and 25mm droop rear, with the limited rear droop to help with rotation.

For braking, one of the best mods we do to our Hondas is delete the brake booster. So I’ve copied Honed’s homework and designed a booster delete, which is currently being CNC machined in China for a very affordable price. I’d actually bought a Honed kit for a Jazz, but I stuffed up the measurements and it didn’t quite fit. I can’t wait to have the better pedal feel, the Mazda stock brakes are super touchy!

Overall I’m hoping for a 2-3s drop in lap times, which would be a very good outcome for maybe $500 in parts! There’s only one way to find out though, so I’ll be very excited to get down to Collie at the start of March for round 1 of the Speed Event Series 🚗💨 by @shane_technologicmse

So what’s happening with the DC2 Integra in 2026? For starters, as I’ve mentioned before I won’t be racing the DC2 this year. Instead, I’ll be having the most fun I’ve ever had punting my Mazda 2 around the track for @speedeventserieswa 💪 More on the Mazda 2 in future posts.

While I’m not racing the DC2, I’ll be doing quite an extensive rebuild to get it ready for 2027. The rebuild will focus on a few areas:

Tyres: back to A050s (slicks lose too much speed after a few heat cycles, almost need a new set every race weekend!)

Fabrication: I have to make room for the taller front A050s, so I’ll get the front tubbed so I can still run the car nice and low. I’ll also get the radiator supports cut off and tube framed, making it super easy to take the engine in and out.

Supercharger. Time for boost! I’ll be installing one of BYP’s Rotrex centrifugal supercharger kits, targeting around 400whp, not far off double what I have now. There’s two main reasons to go Rotrex over turbo, first is heat management. Turbos create a tonne of heat, and this can be really hard to manage in the engine bay. The Rotrex is a much simpler solution, and means I don’t have to bake everything in my engine bay. Second is power delivery. Turbos come on with a really strong torque hit in the midrange, which is perfect for breaking engines and transmissions. The Rotrex gains boost with rpm, so is much more linear and easier to manage. Turbo would definitely be faster for a given power as there’s more area under the curve, but a Rotrex will make it feel like a big NA engine, and that’s exactly what I’m after.

Supporting Mods: fuel system upgrades, engine upgrades, and transmission upgrades to handle all that extra power.

Aero: a lighter front splitter with bigger tunnels, and a nice new rear wing to match.

Overall, I’m really looking forward to more of a chill year of motorsport in 2026, and I can’t wait to get stuck in. First up will be a little bit of work to finish off the Mazda, but I hope to get on to the DC2 soon!

That’s a wrap for motorsport in 2025 🥳

End of year presentations for @speedeventserieswa are always a great time, catching up with the racing fam and talking shit over some food and a good sunset never gets old 👌

This year was a pretty special one, and I’m super grateful to be able to do what I do and build the memories that I have. I pushed the DC2 pretty hard and made a lot of changes to get every last little bit of speed out of the car, and all that work definitely paid off in results.

Towing for four days across Australia to go racing against the fastest Hondas in the country at @hondanationals at Winton back in October was a massive highlight, but just as special was nabbing second overall in the 2025 WA State Speed Event Series against all sorts of racecars like open wheelers, Radicals, big hp V8s and turbo cars, and of course plenty of other Hondas. To do that in a 2L naturally aspirated economy car I built in my garage is something I’m pretty proud of 😊

Like I mentioned in my last post, the DC2 will be off the track getting a rebuild through 2026, well deserved after the abuse that it endured. Instead I’ll be competing in my Mazda 2 thrash car in the under-1.6L class, and I haven’t been this excited in a long time! The only thing more fun than driving a fast car fast is driving a slow car fast 💪

I also want to give a big shoutout to the Honda fam, they all did super well this year with taking out class wins, round wins, cup wins, always improving each event and just generally being a great bunch of people to be around 🏆 by @shane_technologicmse

@speedeventserieswa rounds 12 & 13 at @collie_motorplex

Collie weekends are the highlights of my racing life; the racing is always great, but more importantly it’s 3 days of hanging out with excellent people and laughing (at each other usually) from dawn until dusk 👌

This particular weekend was the final two rounds of the 2025 WA Speed Event Series, and also the final race event for the DC2 in its current form. The weather forecast was looking patchy all weekend, but thankfully Friday testing and Saturday R12 were mostly dry.

Saturday R12 on long track was a close battle, with me ending up on the right side of a 0.3s split between three Hondas, taking 1st in the under-2L class and 5th overall behind a formula car, two Radicals, and a 450hp Subaru.

Sunday R13 on short track was even more fun, with all except one run being on a wet track. The Honda crew were all within a tenth or two in the wet, and in the one dry run this time I ended up on the wrong side of a 0.4s split for the three Hondas, with a fourth Honda another 0.5s behind me. You can’t get much closer than that! The end result was 6th overall and 2nd in the under-2L class, which by my math has me 2nd overall for the whole 2025 series, a very unexpected but cool achievement! 🥳

I’ll be parking up the DC2 next year while it gets a birthday and some minor upgrades (like a supercharger 😏), so for 2026 I’ll be racing my Mazda 2 in the under-1.6L class, and I absolutely cannot wait! Pushing a shitbox around a track at 110% is the most fun you can ever have, and I know @blakescantlebury, @og_civics, @_stitched_up_civic_ , all the Excels and myself will be battling super hard. Next step will be to get the grinder out and get it sub-900kg ✂️🔪 by @shane_technologicmse

@hondanationals 2025, what an awesome weekend! I made the 4-day, 3500km journey across from Perth to Winton Raceway in Victoria to compete in the 2025 Honda Nationals, and it definitely lived up to expectations.

I ended up 7th overall from 74 cars, with a 1:32.1 being the 5th fastest NA car and the fastest K20. A result I'm really happy with considering I'd never driven Winton before!

The DC2 performed flawlessly, getting in 60+ laps across two days as I tried to learn what is a super technical and fun track, and driving onto the trailer afterwards with zero issues. Plenty left on the table with my driving, some corners on this track take serious commitment and I was probably lacking testicular fortitude 😅 Maybe I'd better come back in a couple years and try again..

Most fun of all though is catching up with all the people that make the Honda racing community great. That's what really makes the weekend worth it.

Time for a much-needed day off before starting the 4-day drive home tomorrow 😴 by @shane_technologicmse

Tomorrow morning I set off on the best dumbest adventure of my life; driving 3600km over 4 days to @winton_raceway in Victoria to see how the DC2 stacks up against some of Australia’s fastest Hondas at @hondanationals 🚗💨 Then I turn around and drive all the way back home again 😅

The racecar is chock full of tools and spares, the Everest is chock full of food and bedding, and my phone is chock full of HPA and Dinner with Racers podcasts to keep me company 👌

Competition in the NA class looks very tough, especially against my little old K20 and me never having driven the track before. I have some lofty goals for times, but most of all I’m keen to see the east coast Honda crew and have some great fun on track 💪 First I have to get there though, and honestly 4 days disconnected from the world and camping under the stars sounds like a perfect way to mentally prepare!

@worldtimeattackchallenge 2025

I say this every year, but WTAC is the best motorsport event in the world, and 2025 did not disappoint!

Job number one had me back with the legends at @shockworks_suspension, helping @mijiracer get a handle on @thatruckuspiece’s K24 EG Civic in Clubsprint class. While it sported a wing and a splitter this year, it’s still a very basic car with a $100 Honda Accord engine, very much bringing a cotton bud to a gun fight😅 We had a few delays with practice on Thursday (who’da thunk that you need tyres to race a car 🤔), but on Friday Miji was straight into it and quickly knocked off 0.6s from her 2024 PB. We didn’t go any faster on the Saturday, but a lot of fun was had and I call the weekend a big success 💪

Job number two was supporting Andy Thomas in his supercharged K24 EG Civic in Open class, him having made the 4000km drive across from WA to compete for the first time. Andy made solid progress in every session, dropping down to a 1:36 with a tonne left on the table. On Saturday morning the 300,000km-old stock K24 finally let go, after 18 months at 450whp and 8500-9000rpm, but the boys had a spare engine in the garage ready to go. Everyone got stuck in, and 3 hours later the new engine was running and ready for the last session of the weekend. A truly massive effort, very few teams would have been able to pull that off! Andy is a man who lives life at full send, and in that final session he pushed a bit too hard into T1 and had an argument with the wall. Definitely a sad end to the weekend for him, and he’ll have a bloody sore drive home as hitting a concrete wall at 186kmh is no joke. But there’s a spare caged shell sitting in his shed and I know he’ll be back in no time.

Job number three was just enjoying the vibes. Great people, epic cars, and some truly insane times in every class. I’m a wreck of a human being today, definitely time for a nap on the couch, but already I can’t wait to go back in 2026 👌

Three months and three design revisions later, I’ve finally fixed the splitter issues 😮‍💨 In the end, the mounting system just wasn’t going to work without cable stays, so I hit up Bunnings Speed Shop and nabbed some balustrade cable and fittings. The front edge of the splitter is now tied into the radiator support, it’s proper strong.

To test it out, I jumped on a private day at Collie the other week and thankfully it held up great 💪 No more flapping, no more touching the ground. It was a great test day in general, I learned a lot and I knocked my PB down to a 1:15.2, very close to the end goal of a 14.something!

Thanks to @blakescantlebury for the very artsy shot 👌 taken in Collie Motorplex by @shane_technologicmse
