Five artists. Four Laureates. One constellation of practice. ✨

Opening tomorrow at @melanierogergallery, Tūhononga brings together the work of 2008 Laureate @shanecotton_ , 2014 Laureate Lisa Reihana, 2021 Laureate @rangi_kipa, 2025 Laureate @reuben_paterson and Nikau Hindin.

Timed with the rise of Matariki, the show takes whetū and celestial navigation as its compass, tracing the connections between each artist’s practice – a cluster of relationships between land and sky, tradition and innovation, personal story and collective history.

Together, these artists challenge fixed ideas of Māori art. Their work shows that culture isn’t static – it’s renewed through creativity, dialogue and connection, with ancestral knowledge shaping how we understand the past, engage the present, and imagine the future.

On view: 1–25 July 2026
Opening: Wed 1 July, 5.30–7.30pm

Robert Jahnke’s neon works convey ideas in relation to Te Pō and Te Ao Mārama. They ‘reflect’ on whakapapa as a system of order, while echoing the philosophical concept of continuous time and infinite possibility. “Kopiko Kikorangi” 2021 @cassstreet.gallery, Kororāreka. 🔷 by @shanecotton_
