A cross fit for a king of the prairie. I combined classic cross architecture with hand inlayed turquoise and hand engraving. The reverse side features four eagle feathers pointing to the four directions further enhancing the shared beliefs from ancient times. I’m increasingly interested in our concepts of faith and the beliefs that symbolize that faith. What do you think about this cross? What does it represent to you?

Chasing and Repousse are favorite techniques of mine ever since I was first exposed to them @instituteofamericanindianarts Decades later I had the honor of studying with @ilmaestroacquafresca and @victorialansfordartwork I don’t get to practice the technique as much as I would like but as I move forward I going to experiment with it more.

A collector brought this ring by to show me during @santafeindianmarket this year. I made this ring over 20 years ago and to be honest it looks better today than it did when I made it. The natural turquoise has developed a character and patina that is reflected and accentuated by the Mokume Gane. I remember during this period I was investigating structure and the sculptural aspects of ring design. I was trying to keep things as elegantly simple to allow the turquoise and the Mokume to have their own voice. You can see on the castellated bezel and twisted wire scars from wear that tell me this ring fits well, is comfortable and gets wore. This brings me great satisfaction. ☮️❤️

The inspiration and the final pieces together, they look amazing, this traditional clothing is from Chumbibilcas - Cusco where my grandfather is from, these floral patterns are what inspired the I idea of a collaboration with @shanehendren I saw similarities with his floral engravings, really happy with how this collab came out. I’ll be posting more pictures of the earrings with the inspiration✨

Big thanks to my sister Qespi T’ika and to @alondr.s_s for the beautiful modeling, they are also two of the singers on the song of this post which is traditional music from Chumbibilcas.

Lightning Field,Walter De Maria, 1977, Quamado NM. Art installation that forces 400 human made stainless steel poles into and upon land that had been cultivated by settlers during the homestead period. Juxtaposed against the vast high desert of New Mexico.
Know for being a sublime experience due to its isolated location I found myself welcomed home by the land. My ancestors predate the conquistadors and homesteaders. They thrived in this environment because they learned from it and followed its direction. Our family ranched north of this location near Fence Lake NM in the 80’s. Almost as a reflex my inclination was to look for water. I saw a windmill off in the distance that appeared to be pumping , which is unusual these days as most water pumps are solar powered today. I was filming the windmill when a gentleman Will Cline I have known since my youth and his son Ike pulled up. Very quickly this wide open landscape became a small town reunion reinforcing how very small the ranch world is.
The remainder of my visit became a surreal chain of déjà vu experiences highlighted by an owl swooping down on one of my fellow visitors and the skills of a professional card dealer. No one could have foretold all that transpired.
I’m very thankful to @mfa_studio_arts for providing me with this opportunity. My experience would not have been what it was without my fellow visitors. I can’t explain how well appointed the cabin was highlighted by a scrumptious meal with tamales made for ceremony. It is an experience everyone should have at least once. I definitely want to return during the time when the spirit beings visit.

“What happens when a museum collection stops being something we simply look at and becomes something we enter into conversation with?

That question sits at the heart of “Where Silver Meets the Sky: What the Body Carries,” a new exhibit at the Millicent Rogers Museum that welcomes nine contemporary Indigenous artists into dialogue with objects from the museum’s collection. Organized by Millicent Rogers Museum curator Claire Pelaez Motsinger and independent curator Myvanwy Birds, the exhibition grew from a collaboration with the Taos Abstract Artist Collective and explores what objects an carry across generations: memory, identity, protection, cultural knowledge, connection to place and the imprint of the people who made them.“

Since SFIM I have been busy finishing up orders, trying to organize and clean up the mess I created before the big shows. I have work currently on display @crafthouston as part of their 25th anniversary celebration so if you’re in Houston be sure to go check it out. I can’t express how honored I am to be part of the show. This Saturday is the opening of the exhibition @millicentrogersmuseum that also includes my work. So if you’re in Taos be sure to check out that show. I’m so grateful that @myvanwymuse one of the curators wish to include me in this exhibition.
I was a bit overwhelmed for the past few months getting work done for these two exhibitions and SFIM so when @mfa_studio_arts presented me with the opportunity to go to the Lightning Field I took it as a sign to step out of my studio and allow myself to be embraced by my Mother Nature. I really enjoy hiking and climbing, my Mom took my brothers and I all over to see the natural world including the place in these photos. It felt good to circle back alone.
I was flooded with memories, bologna sandwich’s, yellow chilies, cold coffee. Drinking water from the ground. I don’t know how my Mom did it with her three wild Indians, we were always running away, climbing cliffs and jumping off.
As I sat and listened to the crows, I saw an actual murder. I realized that a couple of the pieces I made for the two exhibits mentioned are manifestations of these hikes as a kid. They are my core memories realized in jewelry. I found water to drink and understood that this land will always be a part of me.
