I began working with the dancers at Head to Toe Dance Studio directly following my back surgery in 2021. I re-learned to move my body alongside teaching, discovering new limits and sharing dance with these passionate young artists. Kecia, the founder, allowed me the space to create choreography and build lasting memories. Head to Toe became a sweet dance family on the west side of town, where it all began for me. ❤️ by @shaneohmer

My two seasons with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montréal were among the most formative years of my artistic life as a young dancer. I found myself in an expanded artistic state, with new unlocked mental curiosities and physical capabilities.

After leaving Cincinnati at 17, and dancing in Seattle and Chicago, Les Grands Ballets was my third dance company experience. At 21, I was immersed in classical, neoclassical, and contemporary works that I had only dreamed of performing, sharing the studios with dancers and choreographers whose vast movement languages changed the way that I approached my own artistic voice. I thought differently about movement, I walked down the street with broader awareness of my own movement, and examined the outside world through a new lens.

I studied Gaga extensively during this period with Ohad Naharin and came close to joining Batsheva’s Young Ensemble. Mats Ek, the famous Swedish choreographer joined us for ballet class before rehearsals for his extraordinary reimagining of Sleeping Beauty. His injection of theater and melding of ballet and modern storytelling was especially enticing. And the company took us around the world from Germany, France, Luxembourg, and Italy to Egypt and Israel.

Being surrounded by that level of artistry expanded my understanding of what dance could be and how to approach the moving body. I'm deeply indebted to some of those dancers who unlocked movement potentials and reframed the way in which to expand my dance practice.

And yet, somewhat naively, after two seasons of world-class repertory and touring, I thought I might be finished dancing.

I was 23.

I left Montréal for New York City on the search to discover creative endeavor outside of dance company life.

While I found many fascinating new experiences and opportunities, I was nowhere near finished dancing. taken in Montreal, Canada by @shaneohmer

Throughout the past two summers, I witnessed and experienced the thoughtful research, choreographic and interdisciplinary development, and artistic becoming of a beautifully unique, deeply invested, and earthshakingly talented group of artists. I’m humbled and honored to have been a member of this MFA in Dance cohort at Hollins University.

There was a remarkable, magical magnetism that I won’t forget. The care and commitment to each other and our collective energies toward our dance research is a rarity I wish all artists could experience.

My thesis, Choreographic Oracles: Artificial Intelligence, Ritual, and Technological Implications for the Future of Dance, allowed me to create a new framework through which to archive, create, learn, and teach movement. In performance, I verbally communicated with an AI movement system I built and trained through my own research. It can measure my body, identify dance shapes and movement, and offer real-time motion capture feedback. Effectively, I bridged the gap between embodied knowledge and embodied technology as a means of research and performance. More content on that to come!

All of my coursework is now complete, and I’m putting the final touches on my written thesis.
Thank you to my friends, family, professors, and mentors for making this whole process possible…
The work and research continue forward. MFA, here I come!! taken in Hollins University by @shaneohmer

From late-night hikes to a fortress built in the 700s, to diving 25 feet beneath the Mediterranean in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the South of France allowed one dreamy, adventurous moment to unfold after another for my 40th b-day.

We explored endlessly and became familiar faces to the sweet locals in the little village of Le Garde-Freinet. A very special thank you to @ryanlmesser and @musuracamesser for so generously opening their home to us and giving us the perfect base from which to wander!

@abdielluis_ , thank you for creating such a phenomenal trip for us with memories that I know will last our lifetimes! I love you. AND @tp_all_in, @kendralea08, @mtthwbrnhm, @nickmikemir, and @drekherman- thank you for being the very best kind of travel buddies. I will always night-hike with you.

Nothing beats being surrounded by people I love, in a corner of the world that already feels like it’s calling us back. taken in La Garde-Freinet by @shaneohmer

🎭 …In awe of the @mutualdance dancers who premiered my new work “The Temple in the Machine” last night at the @aronoffcenter in Cincinnati! What a show! They brought the Ancient Greek tale of The Oracle of Delphi to life, showcasing a depth of storytelling and connection through energetic and passionate embodiment. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to create art alongside such dedicated and talented humans—It’s just the best!!! Much love and thanks to @jeannekindadances for inviting me into the Mutual Dance Theater world and for capturing these stellar photos!
