Today marks 10 years since my mother’s passing. For the past year I’d planned to write something new and special to celebrate her life, but 2020 ended up being a complete shit show. So instead, I’m sharing something old.

When I first wrote this I was coming to terms with some resentment I held toward my mother, for a lot of things that were beyond her control. Because of the experiences that created that resentment, I spent most, if not all, of my adult life chasing success in the hopes that my adulthood would look nothing like my childhood. And last night, after looking at our final few email exchanges, I remembered that she also wanted so much more for me.

If not for my mother’s support in pursuing my career path, I’m not sure what I’d be doing now. She trusted me when I said I was moving to D.C. to live with strangers off of Craigslist in Capitol Heights. And when I said I wanted to work on Capitol Hill she introduced me to the person who helped me land my first job.

Unfortunately, youth can sometimes make you unappreciative or unaware of the sacrifices your parents make.

Not having her here has been difficult, but one of the most stinging parts is that I’ve spent all this time running from my childhood in pursuit of accomplishments she never got to see. Accomplishments that wouldn’t have been possible without her.

Our relationship was far from perfect, but I think that’s what happens when things are difficult and you don’t get to know each other as adults. When you’re young and don’t know how to properly extend someone a bit of compassion and understanding.

I’ll never get over her not getting to see or know the better, more thoughtful and compassionate person I’ve become. But I will always cherish that she’s the reason I’ve become the woman I am today.

Little me before I knew so many people had so many feelings about my name. But decades later people still feel the name Shaniqua is an acceptable punchline or insult for Black women, which is why I wrote this piece.

“What Loomer is doing is textbook racism, hiding behind the veneer of political critique. It’s no coincidence that Republicans frequently mispronounce Harris’ name as a Black and South Asian American. By mocking her name, they weaponize her identity, playing on the fears and prejudices of their base.”

People know Laura Loomer is racist but the rest of us don’t have to be! And if you are interested in a deeper exploration of the issue, you can watch @searchingforshaniqua.

It’s comforting to believe the attack on the Capitol was an aberration, but it wasn’t. What happened on January 6th was a more pronounced version of the America we live in every day. An America that remains committed to preserving white supremacy, enabled by the subtle racism that many well-meaning people think exclude them from the actions of the unabashed white supremacists that sought to overthrow our government. For Black people, there is no distinction. Our experiences in this country lay bare who and what America is, which would be clear to anyone who listens.

Thanks to everyone who joined our panel at @netrootsnation. If there was one takeaway, it’s this: There ain’t no party like a county party.

Democrats spend a lot of time in shiny rooms in D.C. searching for a magic fix to our problems. The answer is right in front of us: Invest in the county parties that have been organizing for years, know their communities best, and are doing the work with the fewest resources. by @shaniquam
