Met some wise old souls on Prison Island 🐢🌴

They built a prison on the island that was intended to hold rebellious enslaved people and criminals. Instead It became a quarantine station for people arriving in Zanzibar who might have infectious diseases like Yellow Fever.

Travelers and sailors would stay on the island for a period of time before being allowed onto the main island of Zanzibar. Now it’s home to 100+ year old tortoises.🐢 by @shannay.c

At the time it was just an experience. Looking back now… it feels symbolic.

Some paths require courage. Some require solitude. Both require strength.

Moments like these make the world feel so alive. Swimming with turtles in Zanzibar🐢💚🤍🐢

*It never crossed my mind that I might be afraid of turtles, I held plenty growing up. What actually terrifies me is the idea of something touching me underwater when I’m not expecting it. I hope that makes sense! So if you’re spontaneous and love trying things like this, but suddenly realize it’s not for you, just… maybe don’t panic like I did. Stay safe, stay calm and most importantly still get that content! 😘😅 by @shannay.c
