I’ve overthought this post for far too long. About a month and a half, actually. Too long, but it is fitting.
Before we embarked on this adventure to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, we thought about it for years - even decades, to be honest. Some of you have been listening to us talk about it that whole time. Some know the story of Don’s OG dream to climb Mt Everest, and my retort that I hoped his second wife thought it was a good idea cause this one did not.
That’s how we ended up here, climbing the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising about 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) above sea level. Seemed doable. Haha. And, lo and behold, it was.
We did it. And by “we” I mean the 53 of us…
With the help of five steady and experienced guides, a huge team of 42 dedicated and sure-footed porters, two talented chefs, and one humble and charming meal host, (plus everyone behind the scenes) all from @climb_kili.
And the 11 of us, ages 13-63, friends and family who were not only willing to say “yes” when we invited them on this quest, but also 100% committed to making it happen. We couldn’t have picked a better group to embark on the “worst best thing” we’ve done to date.
WE did it.
Of course, there were moments when the eleven of us gave Don the side-eye for thinking this was a good idea. But now—when our knees have stopped screaming at us, and we’ve finally washed all the dirt out our belongings, and we no longer cringe at the sound of zippers—we are grateful for what Don couldn’t have completely known when he dreamed this up—that we would be forever changed by the experience.

Today was a dream come true!
The opportunity to meet Disney Legend Joe Rohde, hear his wisdom and nuggets of truth about creativity and collaboration, and while in a truly intimate setting under the watchful eye of Magic Kingdom Park was more than I imagined! Joe is an incredible Disney Imagineer (who recently retired) and an inspiring teacher at heart. I can hardly wait to dive into my signed copy of his new book, “Floating Mountains: The Art of Imagining the Impossible.” If you are a Disney Parks fan, you understand!

The bonus was sharing this special moment with my pal, Elaine!

Whew!! May, I didn’t forget about you! It was all about the vistas and views. We hopped from Chicago to NYC to Seattle to Stone Mountain and saw lots of stars (astronomical and human) along the way!

I’m not saying last week was all about rolling in meadows, chewing on sticks, hunting for bunnies, digging holes and basking in them, wading paws in chilly waves, taking long walks with amazing vistas, but I’m not saying it wasn’t.
