To our Sweet Sarah,PART 4 - SENIOR YEAR… the culmination of all your hard work 🎓🙌🏼👏🏼Your Senior year brought a sense of peace to our nervous system and has been a year of deep gratitude and appreciation to all who played a part in your journey. To watch you at a beautiful school together with your sisters, in a peaceful community, enjoying all your Senior events, making true friends dear to you, and committing to play college volleyball has been the greatest gift this year. To watch you walk across the stage to receive your diploma this week and sign your athletic commitment, knowing everything you have overcome during your high school journey and beyond brings me to tears. I honestly could not be more grateful and proud of you. We made it. You did it. Have faith in your path that is not meant to look like anyone else’s and in your courage, work ethic and intuition that will always light the way. Your transformation these 4 years is so inspiring. Know that no matter the hardship or how deep the pain, you can walk through any fire and not only persevere but adapt and thrive. You have a team of angels with you always. Hold on through the storms, stay grounded, trust your intuition and strength, lean on your connection to God and those who love you, and the rainbow will eventually appear. Then appreciate the heck out of those moments of joy, clarity and ease after the storms! Celebrate everything you have made it through. You have earned all the blessings coming to you and we can’t wait to watch you shine in all you do and become! As sad as we are to send you away for college, the bond we share, the love we have, and the growth experienced together will never be lost. Your dad and I are blessed beyond measure that you chose us as your parents in this lifetime. It is true that our children become our greatest teachers. You have made my life infinitely better. Forgive me for the moments where I fell short. Being your mom has been the greatest honor of my life and I love you so much. Now go fly to new heights! ❤️🦋🌈☀️Love you to eternity and back, Mom by @shannonlaforge

To our Sweet Sarah,PART 3 - JUNIOR YEAR 🔥 Thank you to everyone who showed us kindness along the journey! When you knew you needed something more from high school on several fronts, you chose courage over fear and transferred schools Junior year. It was a scary, blind leap of faith not knowing a soul. Then we lost our home and community in the Palisades Fire just months after. Changing schools as a Junior was tough enough. But losing our home and community of 8 years turned our lives upside down and we were grieving. You commuted to and from school and sports 3 hours a day and moved 4 times in 6 months while still navigating a new school, new people, and new teams. It affected your sport, your ability to connect and make friends, and everything dear to you. I honestly don’t know how you managed but you stayed focused on volleyball, art, and family. You never gave up and you did it with grace. You come from a lineage of strong women but you give strength and resilience new meaning. All while being one of the kindest and sweetest humans to everyone around you. ✨ by @shannonlaforge

To our Sweet Sarah,PART 2 - SOPHOMORE YEARSophomore year you fractured your ankle, hung up the soccer cleats for good and committed to volleyball full time, and we finally received the answer we had been searching for for over a decade that you had dyslexia. You met another angel in your AP History teacher (thank you Mr. Comer!) who believed in you and encouraged us to get you tested yet again for the umpteenth time. What a relief to finally have some clarity and assistance. I’m so sorry for the countless hours of tutoring we put you through over the years! The truth is you weren’t designed to be put in a box, or in an educational system that wasn’t designed for you, but you worked so hard no matter how frustrating it was not seeing the results you wanted. You never gave up trying to do your best. Anyone who knows you, lovingly appreciates all your spelling errors, funny quirks and the joy you bring to every room. Know that being uniquely you, able to see things differently outside of the box is one of your greatest assets and will serve you well in life. As well as your grit, determination and perseverance to always find a way! While your smile, love for rollercoasters, and infectious spirit light up everywhere you go. 🎢☀️“Whoa look at everything! Look how pretty it is… what an experience!” — Sarah LaForge by @shannonlaforge

It’s difficult to process my first born graduating high school. 🎓🥹Looking back at these 4 years, they have truly been a fast paced rollercoaster of epic proportion, which is exactly Sarah’s style. Much like racing blind through Space Mountain, just filled with more pain and adversity than any of us wanted. We didn’t send out a traditional announcement for Sarah. I so rarely follow the norm (sorry girls!), but she deserves all the recognition as well as the people that helped her along the way. So these are my heartfelt appreciation posts — one for each year of high school — for my girl who made me a mom, the best part of me. 🙏🏼❤️To our Sweet Sarah,PART 1 - FRESHMAN YEARYour Freshman year began with hope, promise and trepidation after being homeschooled through the craziness of Covid. You jumped into a new sport each semester (sometimes 2!), took on more than I thought humanly possible, and discovered your love for volleyball. You could have easily stayed in your lane with soccer which you were already great at and where you received the recognition. But instead, you chose to follow your heart, take the risk, and start over. You then transitioned to Setter, the most technical position. Even when you were told your college recruiting options would be limited late to the game in a very competitive sport, you dug in further and worked your tail off. You never backed down from the challenge. Not once. No matter how hard or how discouraging it was not being where you wanted to be as an elite athlete at times. You strengthened your mental toughness, met angels in coaches who encouraged you (thank you @laurenshookitup & @trevorb372 !), and volleyball became your full time high school job as you set your sights on college. Today you are committed to a D2 college program in the top conference of the division. Never stop listening to your heart and following your dreams! God puts them there for a reason. ✨ by @shannonlaforge

James had such a special ability to touch people’s hearts and to feel people deeply. He touched our entire family and made each one of us feel seen. It isn’t an exaggeration when I say we spent almost every weekend, birthday celebration, and holiday together for a decade. Olivia and Rachel were the OG spark at age 2 that ignited a lasting friendship between our children that has been the rarest gift of our lives. When we traveled together people couldn’t tell our kids apart. We looked like one huge blended family and we were. The day we said goodbye to the Van Der Beeks when they moved to Texas, we had never seen our kids cry so hard and for so long. They understood true love and acceptance. And James never stopped lobbying to reunite our families in the same state the last 5 years once we were separated. He truly cared about our girls and their relationship with his kids. It didn’t matter that our kids were getting older, forming new friendships, or developing new interests. It was like time froze when we came back together and new kids performances were produced to convince us of some new adventure they wanted us to take them on. @vanderjames and @vanderkimberly - it has been the honor of our life that you shared your beautiful family with us. You became our second home and our second family. Our soul connection must have been written in the heavens lifetimes ago, and we take comfort in knowing that we will all be reunited together in the heavens one day again. Thank you for the countless sleepovers, BBQ’s, parties, fun events and film shoots, road trips, vacations, and special friends met along the way. That said, Kimberly, the true gift was watching James love you and the kids and you do the same… that has been the greatest blessing and privilege of all. We love you always. Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwen and Jeremiah - we will always be family and we will be here for you, for every celebration and every heartbreak, whenever you need us. We love you all so very much and we will see you soon. There is a GoFundMe set up to help support Kimberly and the kids in this next chapter of their lives. Link is in my bio. ❤️‍🩹 by @shannonlaforge

I made this reel months ago and never posted it. It all felt too painful. Seven+ years of memories, the loss, dealing with insurance that we learned is a scam, the corruption everywhere, the financial and emotional toll on our life. We suffered additional accidents (a dislocated ankle, a torn ACL, another sprained ankle). So much stress and other health related casualties during these 7 months in a constant state of flight or fight. We got through it with the support of each other. Our small tribe of 5. A family already really tight and resilient from life’s challenges but nothing like this. Putting one foot in front of the other everyday. Crying a lot and releasing. Hugging our girls tight when it felt like everything was taken from them. The only way to heal it was to feel it. And we refused to give up. To let it crush us. The goodness we witnessed in everyday humans constantly gave us hope. The kindness and compassion offered from community. The new people we began to meet. Old friends we’re forever bonded with and watching us all rise again. As my family starts a new school year today in a new home and community, I suppose this is finally my loving memorial to the Palisades, our neighborhood we loved so much. To those who lost so much. To all communities of natural disasters. We understand your grief now and it is humbling. Do not give up. Rise again and again. I pray as one people. That we stop othering. That we understand that every single being on this planet has their purpose in the world, even if we don’t understand it. That we find love in our hearts and we learn to accept and support each other. To strive for the best possible outcome for all. Maybe, just maybe, that is why these natural disasters occur. To bring us together as one. To call out where we are so far off track. I’ve lived in Southern California all my life. These fires were not a regular occurrence growing up. Now, I only see extreme fire risks everywhere I go and the mismanagement of this state. I pray that will change.Until then, I’m sending love and peace to all. ❤️🦋 by @shannonlaforge

THANK YOU @actyvevolleyball!! Coaches Charlie, Lauren, Felix, Kyle, Nate, Lainey and Jon - you believed in me and helped me to grow so much as a player. I just wanted to follow my sister to volleyball after only playing soccer since I was five. I didn’t know I would love it so much! And the amazing memories and friends I’ve made mean everything to me. I couldn’t have imagined I would go through the Palisades Fire and an accident this year that would cause so many changes, but I know there’s a plan and I will always be so grateful for my time with my Actyve family. Thank you so much!! I love you guys!! 🩵💙🤍 by @shannonlaforge

Look what I found tonight. A little surprise on the beach for the collective to enjoy. It got me thinking...how often can I leave a little anonymous magic in the world that will bring others joy. ✨🌲✨ #holidayspirit #messagesfromtheuniverse by @shannonlaforge
