POSTS STORIES REELS

Incredibly grateful for 2024. It was an amazing year for me on so many fronts. Challenging but rewarding. So grateful for all the amazing people I met; friends, colleagues, teachers of life; for all the music and creativity and beauty I came in contact with. Travelling and exploring as much internally as outwardly. What a year.

Something I was finally able to achieve is to put together my own studio in a place that sounds insane and that I’m super happy and comfortable to work from. After ~18 months searching in & around Barcelona, a bunch of false starts and bouncing around from studio to studio, I found the right space and put it together. Extra special thanks to the awesome @lauta.della.vecchia for his invaluable help with the studio build 🙌

So hyped to keep improving this space, working on tons of music with dope artists and sharing stuff here. Wishing everyone a marvelous 2025 ❤️‍🔥 by @shannontomas

GETTING THE RIGHT TEXTURES

Example of a full take for this acoustic track. We tried a couple approaches since as always we really wanted to capture the best tone AND character possible.

We tried:

-sticks on both hands (super fat but not right for the vibe of the track)
-stick on right hand (got closer to the desired vibe and kept cymbal parts present, but ultimately was not the vibe either)
-broomsticks on both hands (this one won. maybe the other ones sounded cool on their own, but this one fit the track like a glove ✅)

I’m also using some FX on the Coles (as a mono overhead) for that slapback and a bunch of little percussion parts to give the whole thing some extra depth and width. by @shannontomas

SEPTEMBER

First time I’m glad summer’s over, playing here and there, really fun projects coming up, hoping fall lasts more than 2 weeks this year 🍂 by @shannontomas

POP PUNK
Full take from a recent album project, recorded at @sol_de_sants_studios

We did most pre-production sessions at my new studio. 9-10 songs produced by the man @nawysound for the super talented @arirevelli

One of my favorite things about making an album is getting to explore different sides of the same world.

These songs have fun, swagger, irony, drama, dreaminess, anger, and much more. It’s a blast to move a vision through all those shades and see what comes out on the other side.

STORY TIME

Sometimes you work on pre-pro for a song, putting together all sorts of arrangements and sounds together but then…. the label people show up the day of the actual recording session to check up on things, and turns out they want it to have a completely different direction. The spacey laid aback balad needs to become an aggressive rock thing.

So in about 30 minutes we had to change the complete vibe, including tempo, instruments, dynamics, etc to fit this. This drums were laid on the most bare bones, just-tracked form for the new version.

A STRATEGY FOR WORKS IN PROGRESS

Doing the thing for a bedroom pop track. A little preamp saturation on the way in doesn’t hurt.

At the producer’s request, I recorded crashes on a separate take. They were still figuring out where they wanted drums in the track, so keeping crashes off the main take meant they could cut up the performance and move drums around without it being obvious.

Long sounds like crashes can make that trickier, so separating them was a good call.

POWER BALLAD CLIMAX

Got walls of guitars and strings going on at the end of this one. Felt like some big drum overdubs + some verbed out claps would help take this over the top.

That little fill that goes over the bar is supporting something that happens in the track, but you’ll hear it when it comes out.

JULY

Better late than never. First month in the new studio and enjoying every second of it. New room sounds insane, new synth setup is superior, traveled around a bit, had the odd live gig here and there, enjoyed the WC (so recent but such a distant memory already). Enjoying August and so very thankful for the AC in here. by @shannontomas

🎧Headphones on! Can one mono room mic become a huge stereo drum sound without reverb, delays, or changing the original mono signal?

Big thank you to @shannontomas for letting me do this to his awesome drum reel!

I was really worried this was going to smush the drums or kill the tone, so I made sure to cross my T’s and I’s get this across to Tomas for his thumbs up of approval to make sure sonically it sat well from a drummers perspective.

I used Panoramic in two stages:

Instance #1 - Steal into elliptical filter
Instance #2 - Air

Wider ambience in stereo.

The original room mic in mono.

Follow @panoramaaudiolabs if you want better stereo image without the guesswork.
