To make a classic Pakistani masala chai, boil 1.5 cups water with crushed cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, fresh ginger, and black peppercorns for a minute. Add 3 teaspoons of loose Assam black tea or tea bags, simmer, pour in half a cup of whole milk and sugar, and bring to a rolling boil before straining. ☕️

Yesterday, I received my Graduado belt and I can’t help but be reflective as to what capoeira means to me. I’m a bit at a loss for words, so please bear with me.

Capoeira had been something that I loved and was fascinated with since I was 5 years old. In fact, my father was my introduction to capoeira - we watched “Only the Strong” together and I was hooked. However, Houston didn’t have capoeira at that time (that we knew about).

16 years ago, I began training. I found YouTube tutorial videos and could not get enough. Eventually, I found a group in Houston and fell deeper into the art. However, I took quite a bit of time off to focus on school and work.

6 years ago, I met my Mestre. My Mestre is a member of my family, my dear friend, and an unwavering support. He has pushed me and kept me interested in capoeira through some difficult years, and for that I’m eternally grateful.

In capoeira, I’ve made friends for life. It’s something that I share with my wife and I shared with my mother. That makes it all the more special.

Capoeira has been an art that has kept me grounded and inspired. It is music, it is acrobatics, it is a martial art, and it is everything we eat.

I look forward to continuing my training and learning this beautiful, fierce art form. I thank all the high cords for the inspiration, all my friends in this game, and my Mestre.

Four months gone today, Dad. 1/3 of a year. I can’t help but be reflective of the time that has passed and the time that is yet to come. I miss you every day and am so grateful to you. I see you in everything and feel your gentle guidance daily. Love you Dad ❤️

I’m also eternally grateful to my friends, family, and most importantly, my wife, for being there for me during this time 🫶🏼

My Dad used to sing me this song as a lullaby to go to sleep when I was a baby. I love it. I can still hear his voice. ❤️ by @shanseanshawn
