Guatemala day 7: Today we took a water taxi to San Juan which is a town across Lake Atitlan from where we are staying. Lots of cool street art and souvenirs. Good thing I brought an extra large suitcase to bring home treasures. Dinner at a Mayan restaurant where I had a chicken burger that had a bun made out of ancient grains and all sorts of interesting ingredients. Tomorrow back to Guatemala City. taken in San Juan La Laguna by @shanwest8

Guatemala day 6: first full day at Lake Atitlan in Panajachel. Went to the Nature Reserve where Mari and Bear zip lined while I explored the grounds. Saw lots of butterflies in the butterfly garden. Had to go over a bunch of terrifying rope bridges to see a waterfall and then the beach. Didn’t see any monkeys or coatis despite them being on the premises. We rode in a tuctuc back into town which I thought would be much much scarier than it was. Lunch at The Little Spoon which was delicious and we got to hang out with some random dogs that just chill in the restaurant during the day. Guatemala say 5: Today we took a car from Antigua to Lake Atitlan. Random pictures of the sites from the car. The lake is beautiful and surrounded by volcanos. We are going to try to get up early for the sunrise which is supposed to be spectacular. Wish us luck! taken in Panajachel, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala by @shanwest8

Day 4 in Guatemala: I’m sorry to say I didn’t take many pictures today. We had a rough night “glamping” on top of the volcano. Mari and Bear got up at 4:30 to climb to the summit to watch the sunrise. I stayed at base camp to avoid any broken ankles or necks since it was a steep climb. Then at 7:15 I hiked back down to where the 4x4 truck was waiting and then started the 2 hour journey back into town to Antigua. I got breakfast at the hotel while waiting for Bear and Mari to hike back down the mountain. Had the best fruit and pina colada. Read my book awhile then checked into the hotel. We spent the rest of the day chilling by the pool and watching movies. Had dinner at The Londoner which was a British pub restaurant. A word of advice: don’t try to find good British food in Guatemala. On our way back to the hotel we saw the tail end of an Easter celebration/parade…????…. We really aren’t sure what it was we witnessed. Large religious figurines on platforms being carried through the streets and a marching band. Easter is a big deal here so we are guessing it was a celebration for that. Tomorrow we are on to Lake Atitlan. taken in Antigua Guatemala by @shanwest8

Guatemala day 3: volcano day. Mari and Bear got up early since they were hiking. I got to stay at the hotel until mid morning then made my way to the meeting spot for the 4x4. They loaded all our bags up on top of the truck and then we drove 45 min to the national park entrance where we had to fill out a form with our passport information. Then the fun began. We then had another 45 minutes of very bumpy road up the side of the volcano. I thankfully got to sit in front otherwise I would have 🤮 for sure. The road ended then we had to hike another 45 minutes up to base camp. The hike wasn’t bad at all but my lungs were upset at the extreme change in elevation. The views were amazing. We could see multiple volcanos from the road and from the hike. We could also see Antigua and Guatemala City from the high viewpoints. After setting up camp we enjoyed the fire and dinner and Fuego giving us quite a show. taken in Volcán Acatenango by @shanwest8

Day 2 in Guatemala. Stopped for a delicious breakfast of eggs Benedict (not pictured) and a carrot smoothie ( pictured). Then we climbed to The Hill of the Cross where we could look over the entirety of Antigua. Around town we saw lots of street vendors and these cool refurbished buses they call chicken buses. We then explored two Spanish ruins that were destroyed by an earthquake in the 1700s, the same earthquake that made the capital city move from Antigua to Guatemala City. I enjoyed reading my kindle while Bear climbed the ruins like a mountain goat. Went souvenir shopping and was overwhelmed with all the beautiful colors. Finished the day with churros (the best) and a cocktail (not my fave). taken in Antigua Guatemala by @shanwest8

First day in Guatemala.

After a redeye flight that was actually fine- no issues with TSA, no delays, customs was a breeze - we landed in Guatemala City and immediately were picked up in a car and taken to Antigua. Very cute and vibrant little town with lots of old Spanish colonial ruins and friendly people.

First picture was me at customs. The next few pictures are street signs and the sites driving through Guatemala City. Then you’ll find pictures of Antigua, my first breakfast in Guatemala, which was a yogurt/fruit/granola bowl and an iced mocha. Both were delicious. Our hotel has beautiful grounds. Reminds me of Hawaii with the birds of paradise. The yellow arch is the Arco de Santa Catalina, a famous landmark in Antigua. taken in Guatemala by @shanwest8

Ruby got to go on the maiden voyage in her new stroller tonight. Ever since becoming paralyzed we have struggled to find a way to take her on longer walks since her endurance is not great using her wheelchair/cart. This will let her ride comfortably and is pretty ergonomic for us to push as well! by @shanwest8
