Valerie Madonia @shapeshift3 is among the distinguished faculty guiding this summer's intensive, sharing the knowledge and perspective she has gained throughout an accomplished career in performance, education, and artistic leadership.⁠

A former dancer with The Joffrey Ballet, the National Ballet of Canada, and American Ballet Theatre, Valerie has spent more than 25 years mentoring the next generation of dancers through leading ballet schools, pre-professional programs, and international intensives. Her longstanding connection to Joffrey Ballet School, combined with her experience as a director, choreographer, and répétiteur for The Gerald Arpino Foundation, allows her to bring both the traditions of classical ballet and the values of the Joffrey legacy into every class she teaches.⁠

As one of the many accomplished faculty members at our NYC Ballet Summer Intensive, Valerie helps create a training experience that extends beyond technique alone. “Valentine” by Gerald Arpino, is a quirky and humorous look at the battle of the sexes using a boxing arena as the setting for staccato and contemporary movement. (Performed courtesy of the @arpinofoundation )

Telluride audiences have the chance to see a sneak peek of this piece at our open rehearsal on July 10th before it hits the stage at the @telluridepalm on July 11th.

You’ll get to see behind the scenes with Arpino Foundation repetiteur Valerie Madonia as she coaches the dancers and hear about the unique process of restaging this iconic work.

Legacy Week Faculty Spotlight: Valerie Madonia

This week, we are honored to feature Valerie Madonia, former Joffrey Ballet dancer, director, and master teacher whose career reflects both artistic excellence and a deep dedication to preserving the Joffrey legacy. Valerie has performed leading roles with The Joffrey Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, and American Ballet Theatre, and has appeared as a guest artist with Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, Complexions, and Armitage Gone! Dance.⁠
⁠
Her performing career culminated in a celebrated appearance with the New York Philharmonic in Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, showcasing her range and expressive artistry. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Valerie has since become a guiding force in dance education.⁠
⁠
As a répétiteur for The Gerald Arpino Foundation, Valerie has staged Arpino’s works for companies across the United States and abroad, ensuring that his choreography continues to inspire audiences and artists worldwide. Her influence extends internationally through her work as an ABT-certified teacher, master instructor, and choreographer, with commissions spanning concert and pre-professional stages alike.⁠

Photo taken after first Nutcracker performance in studio for parents at @aab_buffalo. I was 4yrs old in Creative Movement with #marisbattaglia Before we started our section as seeds growing into flowers, we announced, “The Waltz of the Flowers by Pytor Tchaikovsky”. So began a lifetime of Nutcrackers in many forms that continues to change lives and bring joy!
