A few weeks ago we visited the Cultivated warehouse in Thornbury, a trove of salvaged furniture and materials. As part of our research into local waste streams, and as we work to develop a design collection, we are connecting with experts in the field to better understand both the problems and the pathways forward. Everyone recommended that we speak to Josh @cultivated_au and they weren’t wrong. If you want a crash course in repair, sustainable production, and local manufacturing, speak to Josh. During our visit to Tait we learned they had recently launched TaitForm, opening up their first-class metal production to other designers and makers, supporting the growth of locally made furniture. A service we think deserves greater recognition.

As we walked around the factory we witnessed craftspeople whose skill and knowledge turned complex metal designs into reality. Machinery can only take you so far. It is the minds and hands of the team at TaitForm that distinguish the practice. Read more via link in bio. @madebytait @taitform by @shared_practice

We’re pleased to share the beginning of our directory of practice—a living archive of local design practice, documenting workshop and studio visits across Narrm/Melbourne. With a focus on process, we seek to build a growing resource for designers, makers and manufacturers. The foundation of our shared studio practice is grounded in an understanding that we can make use of the abundance of materials already in circulation. Through material experimentation we endeavour to repair, repurpose and salvage from natural and built environments. by @shared_practice

We are establishing our shared practice around two pillars:

Our shared studio practice (designing)
Creating objects, installations and experiences that connect people, place and story.

Sharing in practice with others (guiding)
Working with creatives, clients and institutions—offering guidance across curation, fabrication, exhibition and identity design. by @shared_practice

Introducing Shared Practice — a collaboration between Ellen (@eskeillar) and Jenna (@studio__largo). Ellen and Jenna have shared a friendship for over 15 years, during this time we have both pursued individual careers in design.

Ellen has a background in industrial design, working across curation, exhibition design, collectible design, interiors, and writing. Ellen has over ten years of local and international experience as a design director for galleries and artists in South Africa and the UK, including working at Southern Guild, in Cape Town and in the curatorial team for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture at the National Gallery of Victoria, where she co-curated Melbourne Design Week in 2025 and 2026.

Jenna has a background in communication design and has completed doctoral research in design and museum studies. Her research into social engagement in museums explores the relationship between slowness and social care through theory and intervention in museum spaces. Jenna’s work has been published as part of Nordes 2023 and MuseWeb 2021 conferences, she also presented her research as part of MuseumNext: Next Generation Summit 2022.

We are now bringing together our experience and expertise and would love to discuss how to involve you in our shared practice...
