Myth vs Reality: Sharks and Human Blood

There is a long-standing myth that sharks are attracted specifically to human blood.
That is not accurate.

Sharks are biologically adapted to detect the chemical signals of their natural prey — mainly fish and marine mammals. Their sensory systems evolved over millions of years to find injured or stressed marine animals, not humans.

Can sharks detect substances in the water? Yes.
But detection is not the same as attraction, and it is not the same as triggering feeding behavior.

In real-world ocean conditions, sharks respond far more to:
• Fish oils and bait activity
• Injured fish signals
• Vibration and erratic movement
• Environmental feeding events like bait balls

Humans are not part of a shark’s natural diet.
Most shark encounters are based on curiosity, environment, or mistaken identity — not because sharks are “hunting people.”

Education matters.
Understanding sharks correctly is one of the most important steps in protecting them and protecting healthy oceans.

But in the Philippines, specifically in Kimud shoal they are seen almost daily the whole year round. 😍

The shoal serve as a cleaning station for threshers. 🦈 Tiny cleaner wrasses eat the parasites that are on the sharks. Think of it like a car wash or a spa for sharks! 🐟

The sharks are known for their distinctively long tails that look like a farmers scythe used for threshing. Thus their name- thresher shark.

I did several dives with @mtddiveshop on my most recent trip to Malapascua. I was lucky to have seen the sharks on every dive.

The sharks can be seen at around 12-14 meters so even Open Water Divers can do this dive. Just make sure your buoyancy is on point to avoid damaging the reef where the cleaner wrasses live.

If you wanna see thresher sharks, this is the place to go!
