Before FUBU. Before Phat Farm. Before Sean John — there was Karl Kani. 🦈

16 years old in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Teased for how he dressed. So he designed his own clothes, had them sewn by a local tailor, and sold them from the trunk of his car.

Every morning he asked himself: "Can I do it? Can I become the Ralph Lauren of the streets?" He turned that question into his name.

He invented the baggy jean because nobody made jeans that fit his people. Moved to LA. Got robbed of everything. Came back through mail order. Partnered with Cross Colours, carried 65% of their sales — then bought his name back and launched his own empire with $500K.

Tupac, Biggie, Aaliyah wore it. Macy's gave him his own department next to Polo. Black Enterprise named him Company of the Year.

The lesson: own your name, design for the overlooked, and never wait for permission.

LRG was the uniform of streetwear. Then it vanished. 🦈

Two friends in Orange County turned a tree logo into an empire — skate parks, music videos, every mall in America. Then they chased every door. When the malls died, they had nowhere left to go.

The lesson: sell direct. Own your customer. Limited runs.

FROM THE TRUNK — EP.03: WALKER WEAR
Before streetwear had a name, April Walker had a tailor shop.
1987, Brooklyn: at 21 she opened Fashion In Effect — inspired by Dapper Dan, and by a father who managed jazz artists. Walker Wear grew out of it.
Her heavy-denim Rough and Rugged suit was the proof of concept. The WW XXL Athletic mark became one of her bestsellers. And the artists came to her — Tupac, Biggie, Aaliyah, Queen Latifah, Run-DMC, Wu-Tang, Snoop, LL Cool J.
Many call her "the first woman in streetwear" (WWD). She hid from the spotlight in the 90s — then walked away at the peak.
Walker Wear paused but never truly stopped — work continued behind closed doors. Next year marks her 40th year in fashion; most recently, Walker Wear × Reebok. 2026: educator, author, still building.
The WW still means something — because the woman behind it never stopped.
Who did Walker Wear best? 👇

Before Kani was a king, he needed a kingdom. 🦈

In 1989, Carl Jones and TJ Walker launched Cross Colours in Los Angeles with a radical idea: "Clothing Without Prejudice." At the height of gang violence, they printed Pan-African red, black and green across everything — unity you could wear.

They studied the streets like scientists. Kids were a size 30 wearing size 36, belted and sagging — so Jones and Walker designed baggy on purpose. Oversized cuts that fit the street exactly as it dressed.

Then the power move: Karl Kani partnered with Cross Colours, and his line carried 65% of their $97M in sales. The student became the engine.

One Fresh Prince episode later, the whole country went crazy. Will Smith, TLC, Aaliyah, Tupac, Snoop — everybody. Cross Colours became the first Black-owned label to hit $100M, and department stores opened floor space for urban fashion for the first time ever.

The trend cycle turned and the machine stalled. But heritage compounds — a 2019 museum retrospective, a Nordstrom pop-up, and Bruno Mars and Cardi B closing the Grammys in Cross Colours style.

The lesson: stand for something. The message IS the marketing.

They were doing $350M+ a year. Then FUBU disappeared. 🦈

Four friends from Queens built the biggest streetwear brand on the planet — LL Cool J, Nas, Busta Rhymes, *NSYNC… everybody wore it. Then they scaled too fast, flooded every store, and the cool died.

The lesson: drop small. Sell out. Reorder. That's how winners build now.

GRID Technical Set — built as a cut-and-sew concept for techwear and gorpcore brands in the US.

Charcoal ripstop shell that beads water on contact. Reflective piping sewn directly into the seam, so it’s only visible under flash. Punched mesh vent under the arm for airflow. Coated zip tape with an open coil for durability without a full waterproof seal. Welt chest pockets, zipped cargo pockets, adjustable cuff + hem.

This is a sampling piece — not for sale, not tested. If you’re a brand or designer looking for custom technical apparel with low MOQ, DM “GRID” and tell us what you want made.

What detail would you adjust first — the cuff or the pocket construction?
