D E E P - R O O T E D

I gotta be more serious about posting my art lol.

Deep Rooted, part of my master's thesis, Uprootedness, explores the relationship between identity and ancestry through introspection. The title itself is a direct contradiction to the series’ theme; while identity is expressed through cultural motifs or themes of displacement, Deep Rooted offers a moment of contemplation and contentment.

The vines from the tree merge with the artist's locs which then find themselves rooted in the soil. This physical anchoring to the earth combined with the calm atmosphere of a dusky sky offer a quiet moment of reflection, emphasising the connection between self and heritage.

taking inspiration from pan-africanist works like Negro Aroused (1935) and Revival Goddess Diana (1968) (slides 2 & 3), release (part of my master's thesis series uprootedness) is a painting that pays tribute to liberation movements in the caribbean, afro-caribbean spirituality and spiritual practices, as well as highlighting how dance is ingrained into the region's DNA.

this painting done as part of my master's thesis (uprootedness: an exploration of identity through nationalist and post-nationalist themes in caribbean art) takes inspiration from West African masks (slide 2) and masking traditions that were brought over to the Caribbean with the enslaved people.

with the omission of facial features behind the mask and the ambiguity of the figure's movements (is she removing the mask or keeping it in place?), masquerade highlights the irony of post-nationalist artists’ quest for an individualised identity: that one's identity can never be fully separated from cultural heritage.

Two vita members, Sharleen Branch and Tansha George were among students in the art exhibition 'What Carries Us', curated by Masters student Daisy Bailey at Treasure Hill Artist Village in Taipei. 'What Carries Us', curated by Guatemalan Masters student Daisy Bailey, invites reflection on how stories travel and transform through movement, while illuminating the endurance of relation across people, place and the more-than-human. This exhibition witnesses the emotional and creative negotiations of international student-artists living and making in Taiwan.

The exhibition was opened on Saturday November 1 and will run until November 8 taken in 寶藏巖國際藝術村 Treasure Hill Artist Village by @sharlbranch
