What an exciting morning at playgroup! We were lucky enough to have a visit from our local firefighters and their fire truck. 👨‍🚒🚒🔥

The children loved exploring the truck, learning about the different equipment, climbing inside the cab and even having a turn operating one of the hoses. We also watched as the firefighters refilled their water tank before heading off with their sirens sounding.

A huge thank you to our local firefighters for taking the time to teach our young friends about fire safety. by @sharnafdc

This morning we explored sorting, loose parts play, and sensory investigation using beautiful resources from @naturally.playful.aus paired with natural treasures from @clever_bugs

The children were invited to sort seeds, shells, stones, gum nuts, and natural loose parts while discovering Australian animal shapes through hands-on play.

Experiences like this encourage:
• Fine motor development
• Problem solving and critical thinking
• Sorting and classifying skills
• Creativity and imaginative play
• Sensory exploration

There’s something so special about open-ended play with natural materials — every child explores in their own unique way.

This week we honoured Anzac Day through meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.

At the start of the week, we visited our local heritage village where the children explored displays of historical war memorials, viewed soldier uniforms, and observed army vehicles from the past. This provided a valuable opportunity to build understanding around history, remembrance, and respect.

Throughout the week, the children engaged in a variety of creative and sensory experiences. They made their own poppies using paper plates, created little soldiers, and participated in other hands-on activities that deepened their connection to what they were learning.

During our playgroup session, we shared stories about Anzac Day, followed by sensory play and collaborative activities that extended on the themes from the stories.

We also explored the significance of rosemary, picking sprigs from our garden that we planted last year. The children learned how rosemary is a symbol of remembrance and is often worn by veterans during marches.

By looking at images of soldiers, medals, and important symbols, the children developed a growing awareness of the importance of honouring those who have served, while learning to show respect for our shared history and culture.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been busy discovering different habitats and environments through hands-on, sensory-rich play. From our frog pond and ocean play to our bug sensory trays, the children have been immersed in learning through play.

A very exciting highlight has been observing a real-life snail and other bugs in their natural environment, giving us the opportunity to watch how they move and interact up close.

We also became little scientists, using a special magnifying glass to explore the garden. The children were amazed to discover tiny eggs on a leaf, linking beautifully to our book about The Hungry Caterpillar and the butterfly life cycle.

Throughout our explorations, our friends have:
✨ Explored different environments – including rock pools, oceans, and gardens
✨ Engaged in sensory play using natural materials and created their own habitats using resources from around the centre
✨ Investigated insects and small creatures
✨ Developed an understanding of habitats and where animals live
✨ Worked together, shared ideas, and built confidence through play

It has been a wonderful time of curiosity, discovery, and connection with the natural world! by @sharnafdc

During our playgroup session today we got to meet a real life snail!

Our friends were able to observe the snail up close in it's little habitat. We had to wait patiently as it slowly came out of its shell and began to move. This was such a beautiful moment of calm, curiosity, and connection with nature.

Through this experience, we encouraged gentle hands, respect for living things, and an appreciation for even the smallest creatures in our environment.

Nature play like this helps children build understanding, empathy, and a sense of wonder about the world around them. by @sharnafdc
