Long Trail Rescue | Teamwork, Preparedness & Sound Decision-Making

At approximately 1:00 a.m. Saturday, Montgomery Fire Department Search and Rescue (MSAR) was dispatched to assist Lowell Fire Department with a 19-year-old backpacker experiencing symptoms of hypothermia and intermittent loss of consciousness on the Long Trail, north of Tillotson Camp.

Rescuers reached the group around 2:00 a.m. to find fellow students already putting their Wilderness First Responder (WFR) training to work—providing shelter, insulation, and warmth while awaiting help.

With the patient’s condition improving and challenging weather and trail conditions, rescuers made the decision to continue warming efforts and wait until daylight to begin evacuation.

After approximately five hours of warming, rest, and nourishment, the patient was able to walk 2.65 miles with assistance to a waiting ambulance, arriving around 10:15 a.m.

A lot went right during this extended backcountry rescue, but a few things stood out:

* Student preparedness: The college group worked together, applied their training, and made sound decisions for both the patient and the rest of the group.
* Rescuer readiness: Responders entered the backcountry prepared to spend the night operating in freezing temperatures, rain, and snow.
* Interagency teamwork: Montgomery Fire SAR, Lowell Fire Department, Vermont State Police, and Stowe Mountain Rescue worked seamlessly toward a common goal.
* Sound judgment: Rescuers continually assessed the patient, environmental conditions, and evacuation options rather than rushing into a difficult nighttime extraction.

Not every successful rescue requires complex technical systems. Sometimes it’s about preparation, teamwork, and making sound decisions under pressure.

Last week @jaypeakskipatrol and lift maintenance worked with @sharp.end.rescue and @corvus_pro to get training and certifications for rope access. Five days in a harness ascending, descending, rescuing, and cable riding is a rigorous work out that tested us all physically and mentally. Extremely proud of everyone who went through this and we all learned so many new skills together. taken in Jay Peak Resort by @sharp.end.rescue

@jaypeakskipatrol finishing up their tram tower inspection for the year! An aerial tram is an amazing way to get to some pretty cool locations. They also provide some unique access challenges for those who are tasked with the upkeep! This group of dedicated patrollers continue to step into the uncomfortable to learn and refine their skills to be there when needed.

Remember…. Someone is waiting for you to get them. This high line operation took under an hour to rig, make patient contact, get back on dry land and breakdown.

Beyond training the technical system efficiencies, we also focus on the deployment. A few moments around a small whiteboard and clear tasking saves exponential time down range. #firstresponders #roperescue #roperescuetraining #mountainrescue taken in Vermont by @sharp.end.rescue

Today we found ourselves at the @jaypeakresort Pumphouse Waterpark! We spent the day working with the awesome maintenance team applying rope access solutions for hard to reach areas to perform annual maintenance. These systems will provide better efficiency and greater worker safety for the team that’s keeping the water flowing and the slides sliding! by @sharp.end.rescue

What an awesome week learning, collaborating and networking with organizations throughout New England!
The week was spent diving deep into Managing a Lost Person Incident utilizing @caltopo.
Case study reviews. Challenging scenarios. Great conversations. Skills acquired.

Thanks for hosting @vtstatepolice. This event certainly feels like the catalyst to better strengthen the SAR mutual aid system in New England! taken in Vermont by @sharp.end.rescue
