Money is incredibly emotional. Whether it’s power, shame, freedom, guilt, pride, or embarrassment, I see a lot of varying emotions when talking with business owners. And unfortunately, the most common are the negative ones.

Injectors and med spa owners are usually some of the smartest people I work with. Not only have they endured a LOT of school, they also routinely attend trainings and conferences to learn and grow. But money? It makes them feel stupid. And worst of all, sometimes it’s your finance team making you feel that way.

You learned how to read a chart, not a chart of accounts. You learned how to map a client’s face, not how to map your EMR to your finance system. There are a lot of great professionals in the accounting world… but there are also a lot who are condescending, pompous, or just too busy to properly explain things to you. They make you feel small for not knowing their language, or embarrassed because you haven’t spent the time learning bookkeeping software.

I hate that for you. Truly, it’s one of the worst parts of my job, hearing injectors and medspa owners speak quietly from shame, or make a self-deprecating joke because they think I’m judging them.

Here’s the truth: I’m in awe of every single one of my clients. Owning your own business is hardAF. I don’t expect you to be good at everything, or to have done everything perfectly. I’m just proud of you for asking for help. And I really nerd out on building you a financial system that allows you to feel empowered and knowledgeable about your money without having to watch hours of YouTube.

It’s possible to feel GOOD about your finances. My clients do.

The rep selling you the $120K laser has a quota. You have a lease payment.

Those are not the same incentive.

“It pays for itself in 6 months” — sure, at the utilization rate in *their* deck. Not at yours. Not with your booking gaps, your provider schedule, your consumables cost, your actual margin per treatment.

I’ve seen the ROI math reps hand out, and I’ve seen the real numbers twelve months later. The gap between those two spreadsheets is where cash gets tight.

Before you sign the financing docs, run YOUR numbers: how many treatments a week does this machine need to break even — and are those bookings coming from new demand, or just cannibalizing services you already offer?

DIY-ers beware: there's sometimes the thought that the software won't let you do something incorrect. And that's very untrue, especially when it comes to QuickBooks Online.

When you post a transaction in QBO, you're not required to add a contact name. And this makes your books messy, your spending unclear, and your 1099 management a nightmare. It takes seconds to add a name, and can save you hours and stress in January.

Details like this seem minor, but can quickly become problematic as your practice grows.
