Twenty-five years ago, Greg Sharrow left Boston with a degree in classical music composition. He never imagined he’d return with a propeller that could help make the ocean quieter.

It started with a challenge: create a drone quiet enough to fly over an orchestra without disrupting a recording. That pursuit eventually led to a new approach to propeller design — and a collaboration with @oceanalliance

Ocean Alliance maintains one of the world’s most significant historical whale song libraries. And some of those songs have traveled farther than most of us can imagine.

In 1970, Ocean Alliance founder Dr. Roger Payne released Songs of the Humpback Whale. Humpback whale songs from that album were included on the Golden Records aboard Voyager 1 and 2 — carrying the sounds of another species from Earth into interstellar space.

Now, we’re working with Dr. Iain Kerr and his team to better understand what quieter propulsion could mean for whales and marine life. In testing, Sharrow Propellers measured more than 7 dB of noise reduction across the 0–300 Hz range, which includes frequencies important to whale communication.

As Iain puts it: a win, win, win. For boaters. For whale research. And hopefully, for our oceans.
