Catherine Rebecca “Beckie” Cunningham is widely known as an incredible theater designer (costumes and sets), teacher, and author of *the* book called “The Magic Garment” about the principles of costume design. She’s a badass in the costume world (iykyk).

But if you were one of the lucky ones, you also got to experience her pastry prowess; more specifically, her Louisiana pecan pie.

She created magic in the kitchen when she combined her pecan filling with that pie crust of hers. Now, I have to say I’m not a huge pie person, but when I first tried her pecan pie, it was like a firework of flavor in my mouth combined with Verdi’s “Sempre Libera” bellowing beautifully in my head. It was DIVINE.

First and formost: that crust. Oooh, that absolutely stop the presses incredible pie crust. You’ve never tasted such a buttery flaky crispy light and divine pie crust until you’ve tried Beckie Cunningham’s pecan pie crust. This is, dear reader, an understatement.
And the filling - perfectly balanced pecans and sugar and eggs and spices that was the most magnificent thing of beauty to be seen and tasted.
Each bite was a warm hug, and though sometimes duetted with pumpkin pie, sometimes vanilla ice cream: every time: the pecan pie won.

A few years ago I convinced Beckie to teach a few of us how to make this delicious treat. I took copious notes and pictures as one does (if you know me you understand) in an attempt to capture something that was never really written down, but just felt. Such a gesture to open her home and teach may have been second nature to her, but it was everything to me.

Beckie, along with Jack and Heather, took me in as family, and I am and will be forever grateful for their kindness and generosity to me in opening their home and hearts.

And a special thank you to you, dear Beckie, for sharing your pecan pie. Though I haven’t mastered it yet, I’m gonna keep trying. In memory, and in honor, of you. ❤️❤️❤️ by @shaspiels

Other birthday things I did today that brought me joy: took myself out to a delicious prefix lunch at Nisí Estiatorio; bought a bunch of tomatoes from United Brothers Fruit Market to make and jar some sauce this weekend because I’m getting inspired by all these Nonna’s online; got a foot and body massage (all that walking lol!); and ordered takeout from my favorite Indian cuisine in all of Astoria Curry Corner. 🎂🥰🥰🥰 by @shaspiels

Birthday freebie fun in 5 miles!!! When I was younger, I loved getting things in the mail. And since I never had any money (I was a kid after all) I loved getting free things in the mail. And companies loved sending random free things in the mail around birthdays, so I took this morning to walk around and see what I could get for free on my birthday! Here’s the list: Free drink at Starbucks; free pastry at Panera, stop at MOMI because I love that museum; free cookie from Chip City; free slice of cake from Paris Baguette (there’s a rainbow slice in there); free 3 donuts from Krispy Kreme; $5 off at Astoria Bakery (I got a chocolate cheesecake); and the ice cream from Ample Hills was not free but it was hot out and hey it’s my birthday lol… alls that to say, I think my younger self would be pretty proud. 🎂🎉🥰🥰🥰 by @shaspiels

Happy 16th(!!!) birthday today to Emma!!! I cannot believe you are the age you are and yet here we are lol!
